There was an interesting program on C-SPAN a couple of days ago featuring the scientist Mario Livio (co-author of a book entitled Is Earth Exceptional? The Quest for Cosmic Life).

He concluded that there is no way to know if there is life anywhere else in the universe, unless we discover it.

He said that the three basic questions in science are:

1. The origin of the universe
2. The origin of life
3. The origin of consciousness
