We use Amazon Prime and Netflix. I use Prime a lot more than my wife. I pay Amazon $3/month extra to get ad-free movies and shows. I HATE ads.

She uses Netflix a lot more than me.

I also subscribe to YouTube Premium to get various old movies without ads.

We will sometimes do a week-long free trial of a service to watch a particular show and cancel it.

Our local library provides a streaming service called “Kanopy” which is free with our library card. You get credits to watch movies and shows. I’ve never run out of credits. Kanopy has a great selection of older and more indy films.

I also rip DVD and Blu-ray movies from to my video server for later watching. I like a lot of older movies that are just not available on any streaming service. I often find used discs on eBay at good prices so I buy them and rip them onto my server. It’s a time-consuming process and the equipment is not cheap, so it’s not a solution for everybody.

Roku streaming is free and not bad. TUBI, PLUTO, and many other free movie streams. I suggest going to ROKU first and they will show you recommended Channels..

We love our Roku. We like to watch British detective shows, for various reasons, and have subscribed to BritBox. It’s $70/year, and worth it. After a couple of years we have watched most of their offerings and are considering a move to Acorn for similar content. For free, you can go to YouTube and search “film noir full movies” and find hundreds of great old movies. Freevee and Pluto are also good for free, but there are commercials. Bonus: Pluto has an MST3K channel. (IYKYK). For “regular” tv, we subscribe to YouTube TV (separate from plain YouTube). It is not cheap, but a bargain compared to Xfinity etc. For us, this is only for sports and cooking shows, but they also have all the network channels.

Freevee is the free Amazon alternative. I like Tubi for old movies and Pluto for old TV shows. Pluto has plenty of conservative news channels too.

Prime is great. It has a lot more than you would think, if you just explore a bit. YouTube TV is more expensive, but way cheaper than cable options, yet it has as much as they do. I like the Criterion Collection; few movies these days are worth the time to watch, but everything on Criterion is excellent.

Tubi has tons of old series that used to be on pay streaming services. Also, try Dailymotion, it’s free and has ads, but the place to find shows that don’t stream anywhere else.

I use mostly Prime, Tubi and sometimes Pluto. Pluto is the most cumbersome to navigate, IMHO.

As other have said, get a library card. You can get lots of movies and popular series on DVD/Blu-ray shipped from a library consortium to your local branch. Simple as going on line and requesting it. The contact you (text or email) when it’s arrived. Like old school Netflix back when you got the discs shipped to you. But you can keep them for 2 weeks.

My problem has been getting FNC. I'm already paying $90 a month for internet, and to add $50-$60 a month just to get FNC defeats the purpose of dropping DTV. I'm able to get OOAN and Newsmax free, but I like FNC best.

You Tube TV, Prime are two of the best. I cancelled Hulu/Disney/ESPN+ as Hulu no longer has anything different and the reason I purchased ESPN+ was to get the early airing of the PGA tour, which I no longer care for because all the good players went to the LIV :)
Got Starz for 6 months to watch the remaining season of Outlander.

Prime has gotten much better. Roku channel and Tubi are good and free too. The commercials are few and far between most of the time.

I use YouTube TV. It’s a little pricy but the sports and unlimited recording is great. I’m really spoiled by that.
