CNN: Walmart Prices Will Skyrocket 250% Under Trump's China Tariff!
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 11/26/2024 9:10:36 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

On CNN This Morning, CNN senior political analyst Mark Preston warned that under Trump's proposed tariff increase on China, "when you go to Walmart, you're not going to get something for like $3.99. It's going to be $13.99."

That's a 250% price increase! Trump has proposed increasing existing tariffs on Chinese goods by only 10%. So Mark, where's the additional 240% coming from? CNN correspondent Jeff Zeleny agreed with Preston's absurd scaremongering: "Exactly."

Walmart will just buy from manufacturers and markets. It’s simple. No price increase.

Walmart will just buy from other manufacturers and cheaper markets. It’s simple. No price increase.

“That $79 pair of work boots will be more like $129. And they’ll be alongside a pair made in USA for $139.”

That isn’t how it works. US companies take advantage of the new higher prices and raise theirs up to the same percentage ratio it was before.

Real world example was when Obama put a tariff on Chinese tires because of the steel workers union. Immediately US, companies jacked their prices up also without any increases in their costs. They took advantage of the situation to price gouge.

Fact... I was a tire wholesaler distributorship at the time. THAT is how it really works. So those US boots will cost $189 not $139.

Were you alive 8 years ago when Trump was elected President for 4 years? There was note even a mention of inflation in those years.
Rest easy; we are in good hands.

Price hikes like that would lead to a heavy inventory build up.

The shelves would be full and remain full until lower pricing entices marginal shoppers back.

If a customer chooses to buy the item at the higher price, it's their choice.

On the other hand, if they choose not to buy that item, they can either buy an American made item at a lower price, or not buy the item at all.

In all cases, it's the consumer who gets to choose.

They’ve gone to self check out mostly. Maybe one or two
check out lines open. And a few workers restocking shelves
as the day progresses. Maybe two or three in the pharmacy.

They took advantage of the situation to price gouge.

That's a good thing because it creates fertile ground for more DOMESTIC production/competition with such a huge built in profit margin.

Good luck finding those items. And FWIW a lot of products made in the USA are made by illegal immigrants.

Companies can’t afford to pass on a 25% price to consumers when other countries (including the tariffing country itself) is able to produce the same goods without tariffs. There are 180+ countries currently do not have the 25% tariff so you will price yourself out of the market. There is a huge market share to be had and you will lose it all if I have to pay an additional 25% to support you.

You are assuming that you can find an alternative. If you have done any projects lately you know that it is almost impossible to find any hardware or anything else that is made domestically.

China has a choice: Shut down the drugs or lose markets.

Indonesia, India, and other countries will benefit as manufacturers move out of China to other locations.

Well it didn’t work that way. They killed their own market. For almost three years I could not sell US tires to anyone but the very well off. The US made tire market dropped off by 90% and all I COULD sell was Chinese tires. They shot themselves in the foot with their greed.

These clowns have never once stepped in a Walmart. They send their illegal alien house keeper to do the shopping.
