I can remember a Sunday afternoon decades ago. Glenn Campbell was going to be on Hee Haw. My father was insistent that we had to be ready to watch. I asked him why he was so uncharacteristically excited about this appearance. His response was: “we are about to see the greatest guitar player in the world.” His playing always left me with the impression that it came very easily to him, or that he was barely even trying. Clearly, that wasn’t the case, but you never thought he might play himself into something he couldn’t get out of. As great as Glenn Campbell was a guitarist and singer and performer, he was really awful in True Grit.
