A Vanity seeking IT/PC info for building a new PC

Greetings,

I dabble extensively in video and graphics and my current laptop is showing signs of fatigue big time so its time to think of my next machine.

I want to go the gaming computer route with possibly 2 processors and at least 128gb(more if I can). I want to get into more 3D graphics as well and my current app Blender starts lagging big time after 30 or so objects stacked. So, that being said, I have no clue where to start or where to buy.  searching the net is just overwhelming and ya have no clue who is legit, and who is full of...

I’ve not kept up on the latest. That said, for multi-threaded applications, I’d stay away from Windows...it doesn’t do a good job using large number of cores.

Blender on Linux? I don’t use MacOS so I can’t speak to that. If Blender uses threads in parallel then I’d get CPU’s/GPU’s with the most cores.

RAM is usually not the bottleneck. So long as you’re not hitting a swap file often, adding more RAM isn’t going to help - local caches on CPU/GPU are key, maybe look at CPU’s/GPU’s with larger caches per core. That said, SSD/NVMe/M.2 for drive storage.

12GB on the GPU—that’s in addition to the 128GB RAM.

I have collected the following, I will assemble it some weekend soon :-)

Read up on Intel CPU bug before purchasing a new Intel CPU.
I studied and still got the Intel part but I am biased.
If you don’t like Intel CPU, AMD makes fine products too
If you don’t like AMD GPU, Nvidia makes fine products too
For Blender an Intel motherboard CPU/GPU will do fine.
Double the RAM to 192G :-) ‘will be slower than just 2 sticks’
I consider this list as being a bit conservative. Put another way, a good value for money invested.

166.12 z790. GIGABYTE Z790 UD AC
579.98 13900. Intel Core i9-13900
269.99 96G. CORSAIR VENGEANCE(2x48) DDR5 RAM 5200MHz
279.99 4T, Western Digital 4TB WD Blue NVME
119.99 2T, Western Digital 2TB WD Blue NVME
119.99 2T, Western Digital 2TB WD Blue NVME
185.17 12T Seagate Exos X14 12 TB Hard Drive
309.00 XFX Speedster QICK319 Radeon RX 6750XT
_99.99 CORSAIR RM850x Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
_89.95 Noctua NH-D12L, Dual-Tower CPU Cooler
_89.99 Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case

I selected the GPU for PCI passthru to win7 so it’s not bleeding edge.
I run Linux Slackware _AND_ can run win7(at the same time) in a VM and pass the PCIe AMD GPU to the VM so I can play games while my Linux desktop and programs remain undisturbed. :-)

I also Blend :-)
I have made an Age(~2 decades ago) for the game URU with Blender.
I also use Blender for NonLinearEditing(NLE) of video files.
Blender is amazing for video editing too, lol.

Blender was a lotta fun but I was always limited. doing a fly thru in a structure was next to impossible without a glitch or stutter. and rendering was/is always slow for multiple floors for example.

never tried it for video editing. I was always content with plain old videopad!

Hi; I turn mine off when I go to bed and when I go to work but it is otherwise on (I used to leave it on all the time). I’ve had mine for over a year now without any problems.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. You want at least 32G of fast RAM. You want the biggest case you can get for air flow. Do a search for “Best gpu for rendering”

That would be in the Kernel. And Kernels can be swapped out in Linux.

Not completely. Some hardware (e.g. scanners) have hardware that is in a separate program.

That is true, proprietary ware is different.I was just sharin that choosing a distro is not as important as choosing a Kernel that supports the CPU. Most Kernels support basic hardware except some externals like printers and scanners. But even now newer printers and scanners have Linux drivers available or Linux generic drivers run them fine.

I have a beast of a laptop and sure don’t miss the big old boxes and the noise they make. It is a few year old Thinkpad P16 Lenovo. I got it refurbed for $3000. The graphics card alone was worth more than that. It packs up nice and small AND LIGHT compared to my previous Dell beasts. I do high end surfacing, FEA simulations, CNC programming, and motion simulations. It will handle any of the mesh modellers. You get all the garbage apps but you’re stuck with that no matter what you get unless you build your own tower PC. But after having workstation laptops you won’t want a tower ever again. I pack it up, drive my RV somewhere, and work wherever I want. Good deals here...

You could get a 10th gen Intel with 10core/20thread (i9-10900)
Currently can be had for $222.99 on Amazon.

An LGA 1200 Intel chipset mobo starts around $60.00

Even an i7-10700 is going to be an improvement on a laptop, even with a similar part, due to limited cooling.
I never skimp on RAM or power supply though.
Older parts use DDR4 RAM.
3 NVME ‘may be’ overkill for your application too.
I run multiple VirtualMachines on my hardware.
For me an onboard backup disk is essential, your tolerance may not require an internal backup disk.

I got carried away about having any excuse to post a list of new tools/toys.
I am what I resent, Please forgive.
I saved for over a year and I’d guess it will be my last blast build.
(I have way over 2 billion seconds on the clock, typical for folks here)

Other things to improve Blender motion experience is use reduced poly mesh and/or reduced resolution textures.
It also helps to put things out of camera view on an unrendered layer.

sounds like a monster!! I have a samsung laptop thats 6 years old now. its justa a run of the mill basic. ...and as far as noise, I’m good with it because I’m half deaf anyways!! I’ll keep it for vacations, but my hobby i’ll pipe the tower thru my flat screen like I have for years. the side coffee table is level with the arm rest of the couch which makes a good mouse table!! I havent used a PC monitor or even the laptop screens in almost 20 years, unless again if I’m on vacation somewhere.

unless it was something very close, all my textures are images. I always knew what to look for in an image to simulate rusted steel corrugated panels to brick or stippled paint. and Blender always did a good job duplicating swatches to cover a plane...

never care how smart people spend their money. Myself, I paid my dues, kids are out and responsible, so now its my time and money...
