A blast from the past - the 200th Anniversary of America's Independence:

250 years coming up. America. Something to be proud of. BIGLY.
What a rotten audio/video.....too bad.
Arthur Fiddler and his orchestra were the first ones to introduce me to classical music. I saw a few LPs at the local library, and took them to one of those booths where you could sit and listen while wearing earphones. I don’t know if that service is still offered. I haven’t been inside a public library in years, not since the best ones began being taken over by the homeless and/or unwashed.
I remember seeing that stirring performance. It was about a month before our wedding.
They do. Mostly CDs.
Fiedler. Not fiddler.
You’re right.
The baby being held up would now be 48 years old.
1812 overture is one of my all time favorites. By a Russian. And I’m a metal head. Go figure.
It’s interesting that the 1812 Overture has become an American patriotic tune, often performed on Independence Day. The piece was originally performed at the dedication of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow in 1882. The cathedral was ordered demolished by Joseph Stalin in 1931 but rebuilt in 2000.
Try Rimsky, Khorsakov. Want to expand musical tastes? Mussorgskansy. Humans are amazing.
(((Hugs)))
It is certainly of the last Consequence to a free Country that the Militia, which is its natural Strength, should be kept upon the most advantageous Footing. A standing Army, however necessary it may be at some times, is always dangerous to the Liberties of the People. Soldiers are apt to consider themselves as a Body distinct from the rest of the Citizens. They have their Arms always in their hands. Their Rules and their Discipline is severe. They soon become attachd to their officers and disposd to yield implicit Obedience to their Commands. Such a Power should be watchd with a jealous Eye. I have a good Opinion of the principal officers of our Army. I esteem them as Patriots as well as Soldiers. But if this War continues, as it may for years yet to come, we know not who may succeed them. Men who have been long subject to military Laws and inured to military Customs and Habits, may lose the Spirit and Feeling of Citizens. And even Citizens, having been used to admire the Heroism which the Commanders of their own Army have displayd, and to look up to them as their Saviors may be prevaild upon to surrender to them those Rights for the protection of which against Invaders they had employd and paid them. We have seen too much of this Disposition among some of our Countrymen. The Militia is composd of free Citizens. There is therefore no Danger of their making use of their Power to the destruction of their own Rights, or suffering others to invade them. I earnestly wish that young Gentlemen of a military Genius (& many such I am satisfied there are in our Colony) might be instructed in the Art of War, and at the same time taught the Principles of a free Government, and deeply impressd with a Sense of the indispensible Obligation which every member is under to the whole Society. These might be in time fit for officers in the Militia, and being thorowly acquainted with the Duties of Citizens as well as Soldiers, might be entrusted with a Share in the Command of our Army at such times as Necessity might require so dangerous a Body to exist. --- Sam Adams, Philadelphia, July 7, 1776
They knew the words
I noticed that. Can you imagine the current generation knowing the words?
Probably because, for we old folks, it's so familiar ... it being, after all, part of the jingle for Quaker Puffed Wheat/Rice ...
"This is the cereal that's shot from guns ..."
I was there. I don’t know where the time has gone.
I shudder to think of this happening under Kamala's watch.
It would've been nothing but a nation-wide struggle session over slavery and discrimination coupled with 1619 Project revisionist BS.
I expect the mood will be much more jubilant now that it's going to happen under Trump's watch.
