Much like the ruining of MLB, analytics told the NBA that it was more "efficient" to shoot a lot of 3-point shots instead of 2-point shots. They are already going down the same path of boredom that had overtaken much of MLB.
The don’t play Defense anymore. Scores used to be in the 80’s or 90’s. It’s a boring product.
The population has been changing such that players have developed to master the rules. There were very few men 6 foot 6 and higher when the game was invented. Change the games rules to make the game difficult for the relative larger size, and skills of the modern players.

Ironically, it was in the Shaq era that every play looked the same, and had the same outcome. It was like watching people swin laps. Run down the court, penetrate to the basket, shoot, score!
