I took a Jazz class in college - a LONG time ago. Our lecturer was jazz drummer Kenny Clarke, another innovator. Kenny was a hoot to listen to - his “lecture” was usually a long series of war stories from his playing days. Turned me into a casual jazz fan.
OK, now I’m jealous. Hearing war stories from Klook would be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity. That being said I was lucky enough to hear Roy Haynes at the Triple Door in Seattle when he was well into his eighties. He sounded great and looked like he was in his early fifties.
Wow, that’s a real one. Klook Bombs. Bebop drumming. Must have been a great class.
Did he ever talk about Ahmad Jamal? Jamal was a but younger, but they were both from Pittsburgh.
