Commentary: Donald Trump is now '47'. Why Pomona College alumni want the number back
LA Times ^ | Nov 8, 2024 | Hugo Martín

My favorite baseball cap is emblazoned with the number 47 on it.

But it's not what you think.

Long before Donald Trump launched his bid to return to the White House to become the nation's 47th president, the number 47 held special meaning for me and my fellow Pomona College graduates and current students.

The number 47 is considered sacred for anyone who calls themselves a Sagehen. (Yes, that's our college mascot. Don't laugh.)

The number 47 has eerily appeared repeatedly in the 137-year history of this private liberal arts college, located in the tranquil, tree-shaded town of Claremont.

Examples? Exits on the 10 and 210 freeways to get to Pomona College are both number 47. The organ at the college's music auditorium has 47 pipes in the top row. There were 47 enrolled students at the time of the first graduating class in 1894. The largest dorm on campus, officially known as Florence Carrier Blaisdell and Della Mullock Mudd Hall, has 47 characters in the title and was completed in 1947. The dorm's staircase contains 47 balusters.......

Another alumnus wrote that he scraped off a 47 sticker from his car rear window. "I don't want anyone thinking I voted for him."

An alumnus from the class of 1996 messaged me to say that she had been thinking about getting a "47" tattoo but has had second thoughts since Trump's election. "Maybe after time passes I will," she said. "But not anytime soon."

LOL, that’s rich, coming from someone whose handle identifies him as an Eph, whatever the heck that is!

The Purple Cow Mascot
I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow
I’d rather see than be one.
— Gelett Burgess, 1895

The “Royal (hued) beast” that has evolved into the Williams College mascot has no known genealogy! Unsubstantiated rural legend has it that she* is descended from those bovines that grace the earliest prints of the college campus. It is also conjectured that she became part of the college community due to the popularity of a student publication that used the college color along with the hooved creature.

In 1907, the Purple Cow humor magazine went to press for the first time with a plethora of student authored pieces and clever cow graphics. The name for the campus publication was the winner among many suggested. The editorial staff, of course, gave credit for its whimsical title to Frank G. Burgess and his jingle was included on the cover of the first issue.

The monthly magazine continued until 1942 and was revived for a short time during 1946-1950 and 1952-1962. By that time it seems that the purple cow and the Ephs had become “family”. The House of Walsh, a Spring Street store, advertised “droll” ceramic purple calf and bulls for sale in 1938.

Though we lack hard facts of the mascot ‘s origins and any published official mascot designation, there is no denying that the purple genus of “bos” now holds a firm place in the lore and legend of Williams.

By Linda Hall (Archives Assistant)

*Our now ubiquitous bovine mascot was named in a WMS radio station contest in October 1952. “Ephelia” was first submitted by Theodore W. “Dorie” Friend, Class of 1953, who garnered over $220 in prizes donated by area merchants.

To me he is 45.

There was no 46.

Biden was not elected and illegitimate.

Does not count.

History:

2009-2017 Obama
2027-2021 Trump
2021-2025 None
2025-2029 Trump

When Trump first announced for the presidency back in June 2015 the Democrats, and especially the media, were celebrating amongst themselves thinking his run for the presidency would be a total farce and spectacle and ruin the Republican Party.

Nine plus years later nobody in the American left could have foreseen how this one man would change the political landscape in this country plus, and shatter their world in the process.

Numerology kooks!

* 47 enrolled students in the first graduating class in 1894.
* 47 letters in the Florence Carrier Blaisdell and Della Mullock Mudd Hall.
* The Hall was completed in 1947.
* The dorm’s staircase contains 47 balusters.

But “1947” should not count. If it had been completed in 47 AD, it would count.

ITGHO, Jan 6 Constitutional Certification by VPOTUS, a political act (not necessarily purely clerical or administrative as some argue), sanates even blatant illegitimacy.

It’s not a “quitter’s attitude” to recognize Biden as prexy #46 if you’re inclined eventually to relent. Pence was empowered to certify, and he did certify.. He did so, and irreversibly, despite the fact that many, including This Guy, will always despise him for being so greasily amenable to overlooking obvious state-level ballot fraud in favor of Biden.

And yet, “33” is somehow a sacred number to many Pennsylvania college students!

You’ve heard, have you not?, convincing arguments now being voiced to the effect that Trump’s upcoming term as precy #47 will be ASTRONOMICALLY more effective than he would have been as #47.
