40 monkeys escape from Alpha Genesis bio-research lab in South Carolina

Cops are warning residents in rural South Carolina to shut their doors and windows after at least 43 monkeys escaped from a bio-research lab.

The rhesus macaques slipped out of an Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee — which is just off I-95 in the south of the state — on Wednesday night.

“We want to assure the community that there is no health risk associated with these animals,” the Yemassee Police Department said.

Residents are being told not to approach the loose monkeys and instead call 911 and report the sighting.

It’s unclear how the primates managed to break out.

South Carolina has a frer range monkey colony off shore on Morgan Island.
The island is used as a holding area by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases that uses the monkeys for research.

The state of Florida has at least 3 wild monkey colonies where the monkeys live free and are not destined to be used for research.
