James Woods on tyranny

Physicists in 1900 basically accepted the Newtonian model of the universe. The only troubling anomaly was that Mercury, as it came into view in its journey around the sun, appeared to be in the “wrong” place. How was this possible? After much discussion brilliant scientists concluded that it “appeared” to be closer to the sun because the sun’s gravity was bending light rays reflecting off of Mercury on their way to earth. This defied all the “settled science” embraced by classical physicists. It was to them heresy essentially, because by implication it would mean that energy and matter were interchangeable. Indeed a young physicist named Albert Einstein created the most famous equation in history, formulating that exact relationship: e=mc(squared). The longwinded point I’m trying to make is that throughout history the most minor anomalies are often windows into a completely different understanding of the world.

Which brings me to my point.

I congratulate you on successfully using a Mercurian astrophysics anomaly to transition into squirrel homicide.

Homicide is a term reserved specifically to humans.

IOW, you can't murder an animal. You can kill it, but it's not considered homicide.

This description is perhaps "good enough for govt. work," but represents a gross distortion and/or oversimplification of the matter.

Before Einstein presented his General Theory of Relativity in 1915, "brilliant scientists" had come up with several different competing explanations for the observed precession of Mercury's aphelion (e.g., the existence of a hypothetical inner-Mercurian planet dubbed "Vulcan"). Further, Woods' telegram-style explanation that the Sun's gravity "bent" the light coming from Mercury towards Earth is a gross mischaracterization; that would NOT explain the slow but steady and progressive precession of Mercury's aphelion - rather, such a bending would only account for the same shift in apparent position of Mercury in the sky. (Gravity does bend light rays - but the bending calculated on the basis of the General Theory of Relativity does not suffice to account for the observed precession.)

However, Woods is not a Physicist, so I am not criticizing him for this; he is a political commentator, and the message he has here is undoubtedly good.

However, it's still a little irksome for the scientific cognoscenti.

Regards,

Excellent article. The more I learn about the killing of the pet squirrel, the more I detest the actions taken.

Woods nails it.

Does 87,000 newly minted and armed IRS agents offer you comfort or fill you with terror? Are you sick of this yet?

He’s a conservative former actor who had a 50 year career until he was blacklisted by the left and dropped by his agent for being conservative. He’s been in many movies,

He’s also extremely intelligent and earned a full scholarship to MIT and was close to graduating when he decided to be an actor.

I think the analogy is imperfect for a number of reasons. One of them is that anomalies in Newtonian mechanics are uncommon, especially from an 1900s physics perspective, whereas the squirrel homicide is one of countless small events that suggest something is dangerously wrong in this country.

Thanks for the post. James Woods has one of the best accounts on X.
He also added some new info. He hinted that that the complainant lived hundreds of miles away and that owner might have had some conservative leanings.

Peanut the Squirrel was anthropomorphized even before he was killed. So in the context of illustrating absurdity, the loose use of exact diction is understandable.

It’s probably something he wrote fast without analyzing it too much. I think what he was trying to say is that what may seem small or inconsequential at first to some people can in fact turn out to be life changing.

Some may say “Oh it’s just an anomaly, it’s just a squirrel” but in fact it’s an enormous red flag and you are absolutely right, it’s just one more example out of countless ones that something is dangerously wrong in this country.

We are now teetering right on the brink of tyranny, absolutely. We are literally one day away from it in fact if this election goes the wrong way, a tyranny run by the most idiotic people ever put on this planet.

I wonder how many people realize that if Kamala wins, “the squad” AOC, Tlaib, Omar will be dictating policy along with her.
