Quincy was a student of Nadia Boulanger. He was in good company. Not just pop composers like Burt Bacharach, but Leonard Bernstein. Aaron Copland. Astor Piazzolla. Philip Glass. John Eliot Gardiner. Daniel Barenboim...

I believe even Paul talked about how in there early years they knew only a couple of cords. I mean come on they started out playing Skiffle. I believe George had some musical training in school but essentially all the Beatles were self-taught musicians. So yea they probably did not match up well with classically trained musicians like Jones worked with.

I would argue that was their strength. Would they have been as innovative as they were had they been the products of some music conservatory. It was not how they played that was important, it was the music! It is possible Quincy Jones was taken out of context that happens a lot. More likely he was being an ass. I read a few interviews and he comes across as arrogant and highly opinionated. When dealing with press, he seemed to lack a filter. Didn't know the man but some of his comments suggests there was always a racial component to his views on certain performers.

Jones was responsible for a lot of great music, but producers are looking for a specific sound, Ringo is not the first nor the last famous musician to piss off a producer.

Two of the greatest drummers of that era according to their contemporaries were Karen Carpenter and Ringo Starr.

Jones had a thing for white meat. Never understood what Nastasia Kinsky wanted from that old man. He was at least 30 years her senior.
