It's a question that continues to puzzle people 50 years after it happened: why did the TV show Bewitched suddenly and seemingly inexplicably replace the actor who played Darrin in the middle of its run?

When I was a kid, we were lucky to get either channel 2, 7, or 9 (ABC, CBS, and NBC).
It was rare that more than 2 at a time could be watched, and never got a clear picture (always “snowy”).
“The Real Reason There Were Two Darrins On Bewitched”
So what is the fake reason there were two Darrins? We’ve known the actual reason for decades.
My hypothesis is that the movie "Bell, Book, and Candle" (with Jimmy Stewart as the beleaguered "mortal" and Kim Novak as the witch) provided the actual impetus. The film came out in 1958, and probably prepared the way for the tv show.
The film even has characters which could be viewed as forerunners for the "Aunt Clara" and "Uncle Arthur" characters on "Bewitched."
Regards,
That is explicitly explained in the film (though it fudges and instead refers to "exorcism").

One of the funniest gags ever was Roseanne’s switching actresses playing Becky Connor, from Roseanne and Dan watching Bewitched in disapproval, to switching actresses mid-scene.
I finally realized who Mr Bean reminds me of!
The Dick Van Dyke show was far superior
What an odd coincidence!
Thank you so much.
I grew up as a kid in the 1970s, watching daily syndicated reruns of Bewitched, among many other sitcoms.
I turned towards watching LOTS of tv not just for the entertainment, but being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home, also to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery. I really loved the portrayal of a nice, normal (as normal as a familybofcwitches can get), happy, loving middle class family living in the suburbs.
I was too young to notice the difference between dick york and dick sargent. They may have played the character of Darrin differently, but I still loved them both just the same.
Idiots are still puzzled. Dick York got very, very ill.
You are welcome.
I don't care about any of the other actors on that series.
Paul Lynde and Bernard Fox actually played other characters previously on that show before Uncle Arthur or Dr. Bombay. Lynde played a driving instructor and Fox sort of a professor / philosopher type character.
Yes and on shows like MASH, All in the Family and the Sopranos actors turn up in

characters in other roles
All in the Family—Allan Melvin as police
sgt, Barney Hefner
MASH—Harry Morgan as insane general then
