"I think both Mr Khan and Mr Trump don't feel bound by any norms. They are both transactional, and they will say and do whatever they feel will get them into power,” said former Pakistan foreign minister Khurram Dastgir Khan. Such similarities are one reason many supporters of Khan - who was ousted from power in 2022 and thrown into jail last year over corruption charges - hope Trump returns to the White House.

Amid a widely held belief among many Pakistanis that Washington can influence politics in Pakistan, some of Khan's supporters think that if Trump is elected as president for a second term, he could pressure Islamabad to release Khan.

Trump is not a populist. He is more JFK believing in a “float all boats” taxing policy. Populism focuses on middle class protectionism. You cannot favor one class over another without hurting one.
