I hate the time change. It always messes me up for a week. I wish they would pick one and stick with it all year.

I love the poppies when I go to California. They are so cheery!

I, too, love color in the yard, and in the house! I am not a neutral colors person. I think it helps ward off the seasonal winter blues. I am a chromatophile, as well as a heliophile! Heehee, just had to look those up.

I have used several recipes & most are similar ... cup of oil, an egg, salt, & some sort of acid. There are recipes with no mustard, if that’s not something you like.

Use a container that is tall & on the narrow side. I use a wide-mouth pint canning jar & my immersion blender. When finished, I just slap a top on the jar (plastic screw on tops you can get for canning jars) & put it in the fridge.

Same here but I'm having a bigger issue with FR. It's 9:58 here, not 4:18. It's not even 4:18 on this continent. My VPN is aimed at MO and I'm in MO. Turning off the VPN makes no difference either. Is anyone else seeing this?

When I travel to California, my time on FR messes up for a while. It posts things for me in Pacific time instead of Eastern where I live, even after I get back. A reboot seems to help that.

It was part of tracking prevention. LibreWolf is so big on privacy, its’ kind of a pain.

The deplorables and garbage people won again. Can you believe it?

I've been contacted by the Trump transition team to hold some sort of position within the USDA and have accepted one of the six "Advisor to the Secretary" spots. My favorite congressman, Thomas Massie from Kentucky, has agreed to go in as Secretary of Agriculture.

He's been the sponsor of the PRIME ACT, which, if pushed through, would be the biggest shot across the bow of the entrenched industrial meat processing system we've seen in a century. Let liberty ring. Wouldn't that be a change of fortune for Big Ag?

I have a friend whose lilac bush bloomed in the late summer, not even this late, like Sept.

I have no idea what causes that.

My lilac bosh did great for a while and now looks like it’s on it’s last legs. Too bad, really because it’s a good size bush, but if it goes, it goes. I can use the space for something else. Maybe an azalea or rhododendron.

Hmmmm, now that I think about it..... maybe I’ll just take it out altogether.......

Do deer browse either of those???

I don’t know if I see the deer around either of those. This lilac is probably 5 or so years old. I’m not the best record keeper on hard copy notebooks. It’s all in my brain, but I do go by different events in my life, meaning when I moved here, when I remodeled the kitchen, when we had guests over several days. So I’m gonna guess my bush is between 5-7 years based on those parameters.

I guess it could be finished or on its way out. There’s a lot here that I take risks with.

Fingers crossed that it’s just a funky fall season. Thanks for writing back.

It’s been a week (but who’s counting?) and the stitches are starting to dissolve, so the itching has gone down some. Yay!

They suggested ice to me, too - we have a number of those soft packs you keep in the freezer with a cloth cover, so the cold doesn’t burn the skin.

More than anything I want to start with the cocoa butter so I can reduce the scarring, which is going to be extensive. Ugh! Time for a new hairstyle? Trump comb-over from left to right, LOL!

I’m going to start a trend! :)

My computer seems to think we live in AZ for some reason. No idea, why. Sometimes Sacramento, CA, too.

You’d think I’d have a seriously longer growing season than I do! ;)

OMG! He will be AWESOME and will seriously FIGHT for small farmers and hopefully rid us of the Food Nazi BS going on in Ag!

Yippee! :)

From his book, ‘Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal:’

“Drawing upon 40 years’ experience as an ecological farmer and marketer, Joel Salatin explains with humor and passion why Americans do not have the freedom to choose the food they purchase and eat. From child labor regulations to food inspection, bureaucrats provide themselves sole discretion over what food is available in the local marketplace. Their system favors industrial, global corporate food systems and discourages community-based food commerce, resulting in homogenized selection, mediocre quality, and exposure to non-organic farming practices. Salatin’s expert insight explains why local food is expensive and difficult to find and will illuminate for the reader a deeper understanding of the industrial food complex.”

A little but when I walked in/under the tunnel the day the rain stopped, it was spongy due to wind driven rain coming in open ends and sides and possibly running ground water.

I’ll be able to do more earth work around it to cure the ground water now that it’s not dry. I’ll also be able to dig post holes for mounting weather instruments, rain gauge, solar panel.

Rain coming Saturday so I think we’re at that point where the ground stays wet until next May. Happens most years.

I’ve got enough plastic for the SE end. The NW end can be solid color, tarp or metal. To do the SE end, I’m going to have to set up the extension ladder standing in bed of truck again, oh joy. I’ve got some of the tarp that came off the hay barn that my arched pipes came from. I can use that for the sides.

It won’t be draft free this Winter but the rain and snow won’t be able to blow through it. Venting it will be manual. Warming up to the mid to high 60s Sunday and next week so I’ll work on things then.

We’ve had a few days of rain - WHERE WAS IT THIS SUMMER? My rain barrel is full to the top - but I have no need for that water now. Beau will know what to do with it, I’m sure.

Yesterday I was able to do a little rutting around in the garden - pulled MONSTER Sunflowers that are spent and the seeds are already all gone from the Chickadees, Woodpeckers, etc. They were majorly in the way for bed cleaning!

Started taking in bungee cords which I use to lash tomato cages together for support and I got the Asparagus cut down and mulched for the winter. Need to move furniture to the back deck for winter storage. Rumor has it that ‘someone’ is going to work on the kitchen porch decking and railings on days it isn’t raining. We shall see...if dreams come true!

It’s nice again today and tomorrow so I want to lay out the hoses to drain and a few other projects with clearing out beds, etc. I didn’t get to them pre-surgery, but a week in and my stitches are dissolving and my head pretty much ‘swivels’ again the way it’s supposed to, so I’m good to go. ;)

‘Stew’ has the run of the barnyard for now until Ithaca is moved back up from the pasture when the snow flies. He’s running around and kicking up his heels and went all the way to the far pasture fence, yesterday - which is so weird because that’s the direction to his original ‘home’ farm. Maybe he’s smarter than he looks and is planning an escape from Luft Stalag 13? ;)

Come to find out, even though Salatin says Massie was tapped for AG, Massie says Trump hasn't talked to him about it. Makes me wonder if the rest of his blog post is true. I hope so.

Sounds like he's willing to be a part of things. He was just reelected though. Ran unopposed. Maybe head of AG committee and any other committee involved.

Of course there are others with different/bigger experience with regen AG than Salatin. Ray Archuletta(former NRCS), Gabe Brown, Mark Shepard, Will Harris of White Oak Pastures and then there's the Noble Institute and Rodale Institute who are both working on scaling up in size.

Watched a video the other day of a corn/soy type farmer who's doing hundreds of acres and cut his fertilizer/herbicide/pesticide use way down and increased his profit. People are growing cover crops, terminating them with a crimper/roller and planting corn directly into the terminated cover crop. Rye is a common one. Many get to the point of no longer taking subsidies.

My big concern is that egos will clash and team maga/maha/unity will fracture.

Would love to see small farming thrive but right now, there's a cost issue. Market Farmers I watch all get about double the store prices. Only way they survive is they're all in affluent metro areas with foodies living there and nice restaurants(that I could never afford) with chefs that want better ingredients.

Grass Fed Beef online direct from farmers is $40/lb for NY Strip. At local farm that has a state approve slaughterhouse it's $20/lb. NY Strip is the steak we usually get but only when it's down around $10/lb.

I probably can't afford a Salatin chicken either. I get them when they're $1/79/lb. I don't do Perdue/Tyson though so hopefully that helps a tiny bit. I get Mountainaire or that other one with blue label. I get those 4lb chickens instead of 6lb Tyson chickens. Thighs are the only chicken parts I might buy, but again, no Perdue/Tyson.

I raised some meat birds several years ago and it cost $6 per bird but we let them go a little too far, 6lb cockerels. I did it with a neighbor and hunting season got in the way. Bad timing. Also did the red rangers which are more expensive than cornish cross. I might try it again but use cornish cross and process them in two batches. Cockerels first when 4-5 lbs and then pulllets a week later when they reach the same 4-5 lbs. Day old Cornish Cross are $3.00 ea now at Cackle Hatchery.

Do that, take a couple of goats for the freezer and keep on growing veggies and maybe I can afford the grass fed NY Strip from the local farm. That's the only way though and I wonder if people in fedgov will even think about that? Or will they just expand the market for affluent people in metro areas?
