Puerto Rico Landfill Problems: All You Need to Know
ECO RICH ^ | Published May 09, 2022

According to a study commissioned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Puerto Rico could run out of landfill space in 2-4 years. This long-identified capacity issue has been exacerbated by tonnes of debris left behind by two back-to-back hurricanes that devastated the region in 2017.

However, at least two big Puerto Rican waste companies believe that insufficient capacity is not the underlying issue. The largest sites claim that they can probably take in the trash for more than 30 years. They claim that the problems are primarily related to compliance and poor management, which seem to be the result of limited resources. Continue reading to learn more about the landfill issues in Puerto Rico.

Randy Jensen, president, and CEO of EC Waste says, “There is an absolute landfill crisis in Puerto Rico, but it’s not air space. It is that we still allow 22 unlined dumps to accept waste. While we do have regulations, enforcement on the island is not consistent. I believe more consistent enforcement needs to occur across all waste receiving sites.” ...

They made the island a cesspool, and still live on it.

This whole rant about “Garbage PR” is a lie; just like ‘Good People on Both Sides’ and “Blood in the Streets”. The MSM and RATs are purposely deceiving people about the meaning behind EACH of those phrases for political purposes.

Manhattan or Puerto Rico?

I certainly have no problem calling Manhattan a cesspool

Independence would be like flushing our toilet. China wouldn’t want it. Give it to Cuba.

It’s an ISLAND ‘Mon!
If EVER there was a place where Thermal Depolymerization made sense this would be it.
Turn the trash into oil and raw materials.
Yes, there would be a cost.
NOT getting this under control has cost too.

Ahh... 2017 was seven years ago.

World War II was over in less than six.

Deflection. Propagandist mass media. Are the people so dumb as to fall for it, again? Some people actually believe the mainstream media propaganda.

With any landfill with a liner it’s not a question of IF the liner will leak, but WHEN.The Puerto Ricans could get more landfill airspace by shredding their waste with industrial shredders and improved compaction. They could also benefit by methane gas recovery systems, but both technologies are expensive. Investments the leftist rulers of that island may not be willing to make.

And corruption. The whole problem with PR is that it has been a Dem fiefdom for decades now, under corrupt Dem rulers who often leaned their politics in NYC.

The SEIU (yes, them) also has a lock on the government policies and performance at all levels, which guarantees inefficiency and corruption.

They’re still finding warehouse of rotting “aid” delivered to PR after their hurricanes of a few years ago that was never distributed but stashed away by local politicians to be either sold or given only to favored persons. But they’re so inefficient they never even got that done.

Infrastructure and services …including waste disposal…destroyed during the hurricanes have never been rebuilt or restored.

PR could be a gem of a place…if it didn’t have Dems in control.

Most Puerto Ricans probably agreed with the comedian’s description of their island.

We have been burning our trash here in southern NH for years.
It also creates electricity.
The only thing that ends up in landfill is stuff like construction debris.

There are companies that buy the cardboard, steel cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, mixed clean paper.

The problem for PR is the shipping cost to get those potential recyclables to the place that will buy them is too much.

Singapore is a much smaller island and they don’t have a trash problem at all. They incinerate their MSW and use the steam for making electricity. The ash is only 5% the mass and like 1% the volume of the original waste it gets used for concrete or put in a lined landfill pit at very high packing density it’s rock like when packed down. They have scrubbers and particulate filters in the stacks the air coming out is cleaner than any Chinese coal plant. So just ask the Singaporeans for some tech help and get about solving the problem.
