The senior was stretchered off the field during the Wolfpack’s game against Wake Forest on October 5 after taking a hit to the head. He has not played since the injury.
“As you all know I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from,” McCall said in an Instagram post. “I have done everything I can to continue, but this is where the good Lord has called me to serve in a different space. Brain specialists, my family, and I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to hang the cleats up.”
McCall has a history of concussions. He suffered one while still at Coastal Carolina last season that ended his year.
The three-time Sun Belt player of the year transferred to NC State from Coastal Carolina ahead of the season and has thrown for 518 yards along with three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Wolfpack.

God will show Grayson where to go next.
In the opposite direction of a 300 pound guy trying to smash into your head!!
He made the right decision.
They are making special helmets to really avoid concussions in the NFL.
And I love watching football...which is Much Different than liking the NFL leadership.
But some of these guys stay too long..I know this kid is out early and I’m glad.
Tua shouldn’t be coming back.
God will guide him....as He does anyone who wants guiding.
I saw him quarterback a couple of times when he was at coastal Carolina. I thought he was very good.
Certainly wish him all the best
Basically the players size and abilities, and training produce energies and collisions that the human body cannot withstand. Somethings gonna give when a 290 lb, body moving at 14 mph hits headon a 200 lb body running at 18mph. If the point of impact is a small bone or some soft connective tissue...somethin’ gonna’ give. The coaches who told us that “you gotta’ put your head in the meat grinder”... weren’t kidding...
I always thought they should have had weight limits in football. No more than 250 pounds.
My youngest son played ice hockey and soccer in HS. Between the two sports he suffered 3 concussions in 2 seasons. He loves the sports, but he cannot play them anymore.
“I always thought they should have had weight limits in football. No more than 250 pounds.”
Don’t misunderstand that size is not always a marker of the violence of the game. A three hundered pound lineman can run, if he gets room to, is about 5.2 to 5.5 seconds in a forty. In that forty he has time and distance to build up the speed to do just that. But linemen generally don’t cover more than about 15 yards around the line of scrimage.
The big hitters are the free and strong safties at around 200 to 225 that have 15 yards to build up speed and many times go untouched into the ball carrier. And remember, these are the same people that are covering wide recievers with world class speed in the NFL and college. So they have superior speed over linemen. They collide at much harder poundage and can cause a variety of damage. Ron Lott of the 49ers used to hit people so hard snot would fly out of his nose and he was dazed for a few seconds. And he did this a few times a game. People like Ed Reed fom the Ravens, Rodney Harrison from the Chargers, Troy Polamahu from the Steelers, John Lynch for the Bucs in Tampa, Steve Atwater at Washington, and Jack Tatum at Oakland are a few of the defensive backs that scared the he++ out of recievers and running backs. You find some of these guys played for other teams, but they were monsters anywhere they went.

Concussions are cumulative.
The brain does not heal itself and so get enough concussions and it can lead to seizure activity.
Multiple concussions... A term that should not exist in sports.
/s Don't anyone blow a gasket.
He was terrific at CC but his career has been in neutral since. Retiring is the best thing he can do for himself
