He was a fantastic pitcher. However, as I recall, he always struggled with his weight. They did not tell a cause of death, so maybe, since he was rather young, it may have had something to do with that, like diabetes.

Remember Fernando Mania. He threw a nasty screwball; a pitch that has gone extinct. One of those pitchers with a unique throwing motion. Supposedly the scout who discovered Fernando had a lifetime job as the radar gun guy right behind the catcher.
Wow, 17 years in the major leagues as a pitcher is an incredible accomplishment. Especially in an era when starters were allowed to pitch complete games.
Fernie was the king of shut-outs and even pitched a no-hitter.
