Parents accuse Texas elementary school of giving children ‘sleepy stickers’

Parents at a Texas school say a teacher gave their pre-K students sleep aids to make them sleepy. The school district says there is an "active criminal investigation" and they have removed four teachers from the classroom.

“We’re not going to stay quiet,” Lisa Luviano, who says her 5-year-old daughter Layne told her in September that teachers had been putting a “sleepy sticker” on her body.

TODAY.com has not verified the product in question; parent Melissa Gilford, whose 4-year-old daughter Ava said she was also given a sleep-aid sticker at Northgate Crossing Elementary School in Spring, Texas, says it looks exactly like an over-the-counter sleep patch that contains melatonin.

A spokesperson from the Spring Independent School District in Houston emailed TODAY.com statements acknowledging the “deeply troubling” matter and saying the matter is under criminal investigation.

I wonder when nap time is scheduled for these children. If it is after lunch I’m going to go out on a limb and guess what the children are fed might have a lot to do with them not feeling sleepy enough to nap.

I don’t view a child not wanting to nap when they are not sleepy as a behavioral problem. Certainly that would not excuse giving them a drug.

More of a keep the boys quiet drug. But it is prescribed by the family’s pediatrician and given with the approval of the parents.

The no chemical thing is B.S. I hate when products use chemicals as a scare word. Of course it has chemicals. They mean it does not have added chemicals. Also people can and do have adverse reactions to products that contain essential oils. For example some are very dangerous to ingest. Others should never be applied directly on the skin without a carrier oil. “All natural” does not necessarily translate to “Totally safe for all users.”
