Dozens of Honolulu police officers piled into a recent city council meeting to block a proposed $1.5million payout to the widow of a 'Zulu prince' who was shot dead by a cop.
Lindani Myeni, who was a member of the Zulu tribe and a descendant of Zulu royalty, was fatally shot on April 14, 2021 following a struggle with police officers outside a vacation rental in the city's Nuuanu neighborhood, which he was accused of entering without permission.
The 29-year-old's widow, Lindsay, filed a wrongful death suit in the aftermath, arguing that police failed to identify themselves when they pointed a gun at Lindani and started shooting him that night.
The corporation counsel for the city and county of Honolulu have since reached the pricey settlement with Lindsay.
But prosecutors, police advocates and even the mayor spoke out against approving the settlement at a meeting on October 9, arguing it should instead go to trial, according to the Honolulu Civil Beat.
They were supported by police officers who showed up in droves to the hearing, which Myeni family attorney James Bickerton slammed.
'I've never seen anything like it,' he told Civil Beat.
'It's literally a show of force. It has no place in a democracy. If you want to come down and testify in a civil matter, leave your guns back in the station.'
Those who oppose the settlement claim Myeni became violent as soon as officers arrived on the scene after they received a call claiming he followed a woman into her home, took off his shoes and exhibited 'odd behavior.'
Police Chief Joe Logan testified at the hearing that there were only '15 seconds from the time the officers got there to [when] they were under attack.

Hmmm. Looks like she may have had a little Zulu in the oven
hah....
Body cam footage seems to back the cops description of events. City prolly figured 1.5 mil was cheaper than risking trial butI think the costs of not backing the officers will be higher in the long run as they encourage others to attack police.
........looks that way.....

I thought most carried a collapsible steel batons these days.
I have a few, I think they’re a better option than a knife (longer reach and no “blade” stigma) in a self-defense situation where firearm carry is a no-no (here).
Just curious, but are British?
I ask because I once had the opportunity many years ago to carouse with UK soldiers from an artillery
unit, in Grafenwoehr, a large US/NATO training base in Bavaria.
It was the anniversary of their founding and they were drinking in our battalion bar, the mess repurposed at night.
Their most junior officer had to run around our mess, pants down, trailing a lit length of toilet paper from a roll clenched in his cheeks while his fellow soldiers sang, chanted a song, “Zulu Warrior”, banging beer bottles on tables until the last verse when the young officer quenched the flames by dunking the roll in one of those large Oktoberfest style beer mugs.
We also sang several verses of Mademoiselle from Armentiers, while a mechanic from Pomona danced on a table and acted out the verses describing her charms.
Later at a bonfire my roommate had a Brit p*** on his leg while everyone roared.
The British humor was a little different from ours, but we all got along pretty well.
Lol - no but I was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany long ago and dated another American guy who played rugby. They often played against Brits and I learned a lot of... interesting songs 😄
Those were crazy fun times! Also noticed any time Brits vacation on tropical islands, they get really crazy and frequently naked! Ah...the 80s! It was a different world!
