A former Florida college student is facing several charges in the death of a newborn infant, whose body was found wrapped in a towel in a trash can.
Brianna Moore, 19, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, child neglect with great bodily harm and two other counts including failure to report a death.
State Attorney Suzy Lopez said Moore was arrested in her home state of Mississippi in the town of Quitman and will be extradited to Florida.
An autopsy revealed how the baby girl was found with multiple fractured ribs along her spine and hemorrhaging in her lungs.
The Medical Examiner the cause of death to be homicide.
'It breaks my heart to know that this baby girl could still be alive today if this woman had alerted authorities that she needed help. Instead, she took actions that directly lead to the death of her newborn baby,' Lopez said.
'This is a difficult and nuanced case to prosecute, and our community must continue to educate women about the many resources available to them in situations like this one. This baby's death was avoidable.
'I've been a prosecutor for more than 20 years in my own hometown... this is a case that I struggled with,' Lopez said through tears. 'This involved a newborn baby that wasn't even given a chance to live.'
Lopez has vowed to make sure Moore will be held accountable for her actions.
'For crying out loud, there's a fire station across the street from the University of Tampa,' Lopez explained. 'Tampa General Hospital is a mere two to three minutes away by car.'

Ashley Moody, FL AG, is excellent. I’m anxious to see if/when she gets involved.
And, quelle suprise, the DM leaves quite a bit out...
WTG, LE.
She’d have trouble getting la*d at a bar in Fairbanks , Alaska in mid January at 2 a.m. surrounded by horny lumberjacks .
Gross person.
I dunno... There used to be (not sure about now) a certain bar/hotel in Fairbanks there where all kinds of weird hookups occured. I think she could pull it off there.
We used to go up there from Anchorage for tournaments when my ex played C league softball back in the ‘80s. That hotel was the butt of many jokes.
I suppose when abortion is a matter of convenience, infanticide of the already born might be even more convenient.
I could barely read this story it was so sad.
In California, you can turn your baby in to a hospital, police or fire station and freely walk away, no questions asked. This has saved a number of babies and most likely prevented them from being killed or tossed into dumpsters.
There are alternatives.
I am genuinely surprised. Especially with the name, I expected the Amish.
You mean like her predecessor, Pam Bondi, the one who was hung up on shoes or nails or whatever? They used to be really good executive secretaries until the left managed to convince them to attend law school instead. They're usually 10's in almost every department except where--as AG--it used to matter most.
I've read some judicial decisions based on "the case law" made by female appeals court judges. They made me wonder if there was a female equivalent of the "Peter Principle" hanging around somewhere.
No, this isn't a case of the mother not knowing about the resources available to her, it's a case that she deliberately killed her baby. The appropriate charge is murder in the 1st degree.
I’m in Illinois, and trust me, the male cops up here are no better. Blatant law-breaking gets ignored.
I once got pulped over in my twenties for yielding a stop sign in a blizzard. At 2am. I told the guy that I’d have lost control if I hit the brakes any harder, and I would have.
Nope. No more. They let them fly right on by nowadays.
Whatever happened to "going steady" anyhow?
