NFL's Browns plan to leave Cleveland stadium for dome in the suburbs

The National Football League’s Cleveland Browns are leaving the shores of Lake Erie.

The Browns plan to leave their current open-air stadium in the city of Cleveland for a yet-to-be-built domed stadium in Brook Park, Ohio, according to a press release from Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb that was later confirmed by the Browns owners.

Jimmy and Dee Haslam, the principals of the ownership group that owns the Browns, notified Bibb of their plan to move on Wednesday night, according to Bibb. He announced the news in a scathing Thursday press release in which he called the Haslams’ choice “driven by a desire to maximize profits rather than positive impact.”

“They had the opportunity to reinvest in Cleveland, transform the current stadium into a world-class facility, enhance the fan experience, and remain highly profitable,” Bibb said. “We put those options on the table in good faith. Unfortunately, that was not enough.”

In a joint statement, the Haslams said it was essential that the team had a domed stadium for “year-round activity,” and the economics of building a dome on some designated land that was still on the lake in the city of Cleveland did not make sense.

Maybe Baltimore will build a new stadium for the Browns.

It’s what I love about the Free Republic: Readers who post on NFL threads stating that they could care less about the NFL...yet find time to post about it.

I think it’s more about the fans being softer.

Note that after reaching 4 Super Bowls while playing at The Met, the Vikings haven’t been back to the Super Bowl since.

I am a lifelong Rams fan. The weather beat us three times against the Vikings, twice in Minnesota ice and snow, and once in the Colosseum when Pat "The Dwarf" Haden had to contend with sinking into mud slides. We didn't get our revenge for another quarter-century.

It seems nowadays many teams get only 20 years or so out of a stadium , before it’s time to build a new stadium.

That stadium was a piece of crap when they built it. What happened was after the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1995, they had 4 years to completely demo the old and erect a new in time for the Browns to return as an expansion team in 1999 So they rushed out a cookie cutter stadium that was less comfortable that the old one.

The parking is ridiculous and you risk a smash and grab any time you park down there. There are potholes and road closures all over the place, do you never know which way you’re going to go to get to the freeway.

The local politicians are corrupt too. And liberal city government does nothing to make this a pleasant experience for fans or for the team.

So screw downtown Cleveland. I say head to Brookpark. And screw 50mph gusts in 10 below weather.

Let’s go to Brookpark, build a state of the art dome that can be used more than 10 times a year, and land a Super Bowl. Lord knows, we’ll not play in one in my lifetime. May as well have others come play it here.

Disgusting waste of tax payer money. They should have put the roof on it when they built the present stadium, which by the way is good as new.

That stadium sucks and was built by city government. And they didnt have time to plan and build a dome. The needed a “cookie cutter” as quickly as possible cause they had under four years to demo the old and erect the new.

And that facility that is used 10 times a year is a complete waste of prime waterfront real estate. As is also Burke Lakefront Airport.

Dunno about that. It's Cleveland.

Not Miami.

Not like you can go to the beach there.

JimJohn, what I was really posting about was the new dome stadium and that taxpayers are footing the bill. I got sidetracked and wrote enough. Where all that was going was to just state that I feel sorry for taxpayers in Cleveland or the lucky suburbs that have to pay for these things, whether they want to or not.

8^)

It snows well past Easter. Indians opening day 19zz. It snowed. Thunderstorms in the summer, just plain rain spring and fall. And late in the season, Browns game, bright sunny day. Those are the coldest. 15 degrees.

(Not to mention the wind off the lake in February once it has frozen halfway to Canada. Work outside in that. It’s a ballbust.)

Shocking that business people want to make money!

OTOH, kinda surprising as the new Browns stadium is barely thirty years old.

But look at Atlanta.... in fifty years the Falcons have gone from Fulton County Stadium to the (now razed) Georgia Dome to Mercedes Benz Stadium. It's the nature of the business.

Note to Ohio taxpayers, a preview of coming attractions from NYS...

New York taxpayers to shell out record $850M for new Buffalo Bills stadium The agreement, if approved, would include $600 million from the state and $250 million from Erie County in an effort to keep the Bills in Buffalo for decades to come.

We don’t care about the nfl. It’s amusing reading about how people get excited about it.
We like pointing out to other people that Rome was having a circus every day before the fall of that empire.
Its what keeps the sheep from revolting.
Seems a lot of people don’t care about history repeating itself.
Plus we like your crybaby reactions.
More entertaining then sport ball.
