Here’s how much California spends on each homeless person

California has invested a staggering $24 billion over the past five fiscal years to address homelessness, a figure that underscores the state’s urgent effort to curb this intractable crisis.

Yet, as this spending has increased, so has California’s homeless population.

In the 2021-22 fiscal year, when the homeless population was estimated to be 172,000, California spent $7.2 billion, which equated to nearly $42,000 per homeless individual.

The spending includes housing and rental assistance, physical and mental health outreach, case management, and funds to purchase motels and other types of temporary housing.

In a scathing report released in April, the California State Auditor determined the state has done a poor job accounting for homeless spending and tracking results.

“We believe that the State’s policymakers and the public need up‑to‑date information to evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of billions of dollars in state spending,” the Auditor’s office said.

Wait - they’re telling us the system is corrupt and that major amounts of money are missing? Well, I’ll be...

A couple hundred dollars for a backpack, sleeping bag, and a tent. That’s all they need as vagrants. They can walk cross country on long hikes and place food 20-30 miles apart. Do it on unused railroad tracks. I’d be good for the cardio.

And yet I somehow manage to be quite comfortable spending only about $12,000 per year... Before Bidenomics, I spent about $8000 a year.

I think they meant ..
how much OPM California spends on the homeless. Because the cost of homes are through the roof.
No pun intended.

This money isn’t going to that homeless guy, this money is spent on supporting the SYSTEM of the homeless, this money supports union government employees and buys their condos and elaborate benefits and wealthy retirements.

Remember before Gingrich that only 28 cents of every welfare dollar went to the poor, the rest was for the business of government workers, and it might be worse now, government unions are a business.

Yet, as this spending has increased, so has California’s homeless population.

WHAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!!?!

When you subsidize something, it increases?

Who would've thought...

(Except every economist ever, including the commie ones...)

The Great State of California: I'm subsidizing peoples' drug use (needle programs etc)

Also California: "Why are so many people staying on drugs and not 'stepping up' into society at large?!?

No amount of money will solve the “homelessness” problem, and California’s efforts prove it.

Dear Californicator politicians,
the more taxpayer money is thrown at “homeless” and your ridiculous welfare benfits system, the more homeless you’re gonna attract

The most important concept is other state's peoples money (OSPM). CA can do whatever it wants with revenues raised from Californians - what I worry about is the Federal dollars that leak into this equation. If CA wants to give bonuses to illegals, more power to them, just as long as it is only CA general revenue $$’s. MediCal spends a lot of federal dollars, but CA defines eligibility to include illegals. It shouldn't be hard to track federal $’s in this age of information technology. No federal dollars for crazy CA state mandates.

CONSERVATIVE reporters should ask each politician if they could take just a few of these poor humans into their households. We all want their answers.

“a figure that underscores the state’s urgent effort to curb this intractable crisis.”

It’s not an intractable crisis. Singapore has hardly any “homeless”, ie, druggies.

Go there and see how they managed to solve this “intractable crisis”!
