Roger Goodell Drops a Bombshell: Super Bowl could go international, and fans are losing it

Goodell's radical proposals have fans wondering what happens next.

Hold onto your helmets-NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell just shook the football world with jaw-dropping news! During a fan forum in London, Goodell hinted at what could be the most radical change to the league's history: the first-ever Super Bowl outside the U.S. That's right-America's biggest sports spectacle might go global.

Goodell had previously dismissed the idea of moving the Super Bowl overseas. But this time, the commish changed his tune, saying, "Things change." The shift is part of a bold strategy to expand the NFL's international footprint, including up to 16 overseas games annually and even floating the idea of an 18-game regular season.

Super Bowl in Dublin or Rio? Fans can't stop buzzing

The NFL has already scored with its regular-season games in London, dating back to 2007, drawing massive crowds and proving that football's appeal knows no borders. But Goodell's latest vision opens doors to locations like Ireland, Brazil, and Asia for both regular-season games and-potentially-the Super Bowl itself.

Imagine bars in Dublin packed with fans, or beaches in Rio buzzing with NFL fever. An international Super Bowl could generate not only "new revenue streams" but also grow viewership to an entirely new level. Football wouldn't just be America's game anymore-it would become a global phenomenon.

International games have had their fair share of drama

As thrilling as this sounds, the NFL's overseas adventures haven't been without controversy. Recent games in London sparked criticism over questionable officiating, including dubious pass interference calls and a bizarre roughing-the-punter penalty that had fans howling on social media.

And when the NFL staged its first game in Brazil, things got even messier. Fans complained about safety issues, poor streaming coverage, and bizarrely, a ban on fans wearing green. These hiccups raise concerns about the NFL's ability to smoothly manage international events on such a grand scale.

Will the NFL pull this off?

Despite the backlash, Goodell seems unfazed. He's pushing forward with his vision, determined to iron out the kinks and elevate the NFL to new heights internationally. "If we get it right, the league will flourish like never before," he hinted. \ While challenges remain, the prospect of a Super Bowl abroad has ignited excitement across fan bases. Could this bold gamble redefine America's favorite sport? We'll just have to wait and see.

One thing's for sure: football fans better get their passports ready-the next Super Bowl might not be in Vegas or Miami but in Dublin, Rio, or even Tokyo!

Why do U.S. sports league hate U.S. fans? And don't even say the NFL is the worse - the NBA would strangle every fan they have for more access to the Chinese market. It's only a matter of time that they have "Kill a Uyghur" night at halftime.

The NFL will never overtake soccer in Europe.

Looks like we need an All American League and then we can kick the NFL to the curb

Dublin or Rio? Nobody in either of those places gives a hoot about American football.

That’s true. I stopped caring about the national felon league after the domestic violence incidents involving Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson.

Fine by me. Offer it to the highest bidder. It’s the NFL that benefits, not us. Think February. It’s pretty cold here everywhere except in the southern US. Somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere would really dig the exposure as well as the tourism. Buenos Aires-a gift to Javier Milei.

I watched in person the Chiefs play the Rams in the Berlin Olympic stadium in 1990.

It was hilarious watching the Germans try to do “the Wave”.

Did they say “Sieg Heil” while doing it?

How hot would Rio be in early February? That’s summer there.

August 1983, Cardinals vs Vikings, Wembley stadium, London. First football game in England. It was a blast. The Brits loved it.

Preseason? I don’t remember any games overseas until the 80’s or 90’s.

Yep, to the point where about half of all NFL fans are now women. No wonder he’s paid $64 mil per year by the owners.

Agree. NFL is boring a hell nowadays, too. 4 hours of snoozefest. Reporter-ettes blabbing on the sideline, endless commercials, replay upon replay, timeouts, reviews, multi-national anthems.

NFL can go the way of Noosecar. American men are tired of it.

Sydney, Aus. Good for tourism. Problem is they’d have to waive their visa requirements. Their covid response was stupid too.
