Former Jets defensive tackle Abdul Salaam, a member of the team’s famous “New York Sack Exchange” defensive line, has died at the age of 71, his wife, Debbie, told ESPN on Wednesday.

He had been dealing with multiple health issues, including diabetes, per the report.

Salaam played for the Jets for eight seasons from 1976-83 and starred alongside Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko and Marty Lyons on the Jets’ feared defensive line.

The four first became teammates in 1979 and played together for five seasons, with the nickname reportedly first surfacing in 1981.

Salaam has been sick for a long time (before anyone starts in on the vax theory).

A real good, blue collar DT who did the dirty work on the inside of that terrific Jets defensive line in the early 80’s. Klecko praised him during his (Klecko’s) HOF acceptance speech.

His real name was Larry Faulk. I guess he changed it because he was tired of being one of the Faulkers.

If they had any kind of offense, those Jets teams should at least have gone to one SB.

They got shutout 14-0 by the Dolphins in the 1982 AFC Championship Game.

Great line, if only they drafted Marino.

Marino was drafted after the sack exchange was done and Salaam was no longer on the team. And fact is Kenny O’Brien, who was an outstanding QB, has as many Super Bowl rings as Marino and had a winning record against Marino.
