Why do you think this is a bad idea? Who’s currently in power, and what do you think they’d do with a law such as this?

Did I say it was a bad idea? I said that there was much more to say. I don't want to be posting too much about cutting people's tongues half off on here. That upsets people.

Oh, okay, should have read before responding. I would do FAR more than prosecuting for lies. I have had ALL I can take of this. You are talking to the WRONG person. Leave it alone.

“Verbiage, legalese and examples are rough at best and should be peer reviewed for accuracy and discussion...”

Some might think those words are an admission that you aren’t telling the truth and therefore must be telling lies.

Trouble is that our side is not in power. The left controls the government and many of the courts. They have shown a very great willingness to weapon I ever the courts and the law against their political opposition. What do you think they would do with a law like this? I have some examples that are certainly not far-fetched:

1. They are saying that the recent flooding in NC,TN etc from hurricane Helene is directly related to climate change. Do you think they would not use this law to prosecute anyone who objects to this as a liar?

2. We know that abortion is killing a human, but they claim that a baby is not really human until birth. If someone maintains that the pre born baby is a human, would they not call that a “lie” and prosecute?

3. The Biden/Harris admin has set up an app where people can enter the country illegally and make an asylum claim, meaning that they are technically here legally. Think of the Hatian migrants in Springfield OH. When Trump or Vance calls them illegal migrants, that is technically untrue, even though we all know they entered illegally. Do you not think they would prosecute “liars” for calling them illegal?

4. We all know how Trump speaks. When he says something like “We created the best economy ever” we know that he just really means that we had a booming economy when he was in office. (Seriously, but not literally — that is the best explanation I’ve heard about how to interpret what Trump says). The left can point to say, unemployment numbers in 1948 that were 0.1% lower than the lowest figure under Trump and say “liar!” Do you think they would not prosecute under this law?

There are many other such examples. I get your frustration, and I think this idea is well-intentioned. But our Founders recognized that criminalizing political speech is a really bad idea. That has not changed over the past 250 years. God intentions are not enough — this law would lead to very undesirable effects.

Agreed. Their actions have led to very undesirable thoughts and intentions on the part of millions of us now living. They started it...

Hot tar would be murder. We have never used hot tar. It was used in battle not long ago.

Cold tar has been around for centuries. Also known as roof patch or mastic.

This post is not “political speech”.

All things said on the campaigning trail for political office, or the exercise of that office once elected, is NOT all “political speech”.

This is about seeking an job over the population wherein, if elected, many of these people will have the ability to exercise life ending decision power over citizens.

Why on earth do you value Senators over the American people?

When the Senate committees convene to question an appointee to determine if they are fit for office and what their experience, skill and level of wisdom is to be able to determine if they can be reasonably able to perform the duties of that appointment, an oath is taken to answer truthfully. False testimony is perjury.

Campaigning for political office is NOT all political speech and promises.

Lying to the American people about: verifiable historical events, personal experience, legislative initiatives and their results, and willingness to honor the Constitutions, National and State (treason) should be, and in some cases ALREADY ARE, criminal.

This post is not about free speech.
It is about a candidate perjuring themselves to the American people in things that are able to be judged true and false.

It is not about a candidates opinions.

Legal in certain situations. Else, perjury.

Just because perjury is not prosecuted any longer shouldn’t be construed as ‘legal’. Same with oath breaking. Break your oath to Constitution - get the boot and prison.

The system isn’t working and new checks are required.

But do you really think my examples are far fetched? It’s not about what YOU intend with this idea. It’s the reality of how those on the left would twist such a law to intimidate and silence conservative thought and opinion. I get where you are coming from, but criminalizing speech, except in limited corcumstances like court and congressional hearings, is not really a good idea. Government cannot be trusted with too much power.

BTW, even perjury laws already on the books get abused by the government - just ask Steve Bannon and Scooter Libby. Do we really want to give the government more ammo?

the
dems
are
doing
it
already.

not criminalizing speech. criminalizing provable lies in elected office or attempting to gain office.

we must start punishing treason and oath breakers. Hopefully we can agree on that.

but lying to the public by a elected official, or those seeking office should not be tolerated, imo.
