The bearing of an object in relation to north: either true bearing, using the geographical or true north, or magnetic bearing, using magnetic north.
relative bearing
A bearing relative to the direction in which the vessel is pointing or traveling; the angle between the vessel's forward direction and an object, as measured clockwise from the bow.

A naval submariner's term for the angle between a target's course and the line of sight to the submarine. It is expressed as port or starboard, so never exceeds 180 degrees. This is one of the figures entered into the Torpedo Data Computer that makes all the calculations necessary for a torpedo attack on the target. Not to be confused with doubling the angle on the bow.

The ship is sailed on a constant course and speed. The distance shown on the log is noted when the relative bearing of a fixed point is taken, and the increase in that bearing is watched until it is twice the original bearing, and the log is read again. The distance travelled between the two bearings is the distance of the ship from the fixed point when the second bearing was taken. Allowances for tidal streams may or may not be allowed for, depending on the accuracy required.

A term in navigation which means that some object, usually another ship viewed from the deck or bridge of one’s own ship, is getting closer but maintaining the same absolute bearing. If this continues, the objects will collide. Constant bearing means there is no relative lateral motion of an object, and the object appears to be fixed in position. As the range decreases, unless a change is made, there will be a collision.
