The Mets play a doubleheader today against the Braves. Whichever team wins the first game is in the playoffs. If they sweep, then the DBacks are in. If they split, then NY and ATL are in.
Play ball!

This double header could really wreak havoc with the Mets and Braves pitching staffs going into the playoffs.
So, the game 1 winner will have to decide how hard they want to win game 2. It will affect the seeding and who they play in the WC round.
So, does the game 1 winner pull their starters for game 2? Or go for the sweep?
And the Dbacks, if there is a sweep, would be in fairly good shape with the day off going into the WC round.
It will be
Mets: Megill (RHP 3.98 ERA)
vs
Braves: Schwellenbach (RHP 3.47 ERA)
in Game 1.
I was thinking the same thing.., the DBacks could have made it moot if they hadn’t lost the first two games against the Padres.
#LGM!!!!
They always find a way to blow it but all they need is one today baby!!!
If the Mets win the first game, is there strategy that would advise pulling usual starters for the second game and likely taking a loss to not risk injury and rest their starters?
If the Mets win game one i very much doubt Severino pitches in the second game. They will save him for tomorrows opener in the wildcard series.
There is also talk Chris Sale, who is supposed to pitch the second game for Atlanta, is injured which is why he has not pitched in 12 days.
See post #10- just my speculation at this point
If the Mets and braves each forfeit one game they both go to the playoffs and don’t have to burn their pitching.
I feel different: ABM, anyone but Mets.
I believe they were at about .500 in September while the Mets and Braves were over .500. They didn’t exactly collapse but stalled badly down the stretch.
These teams still have a 40 man roster, right? They should have a half-dozen minor leaguers who can each pitch a couple of innings who won’t be on the team in the post-season. They could even alternate righties and lefties.
If either the Mets or Braves sweep, the DBacks are in. If the Mets and Braves split, Mets and Braves are in and the DBacks are out. An interesting set up. But... whomever wins the first game has no incentive to win the second as they will be in regardless of the outcome of the second game.
And the WC round starts tomorrow regardless.
Problem is the WC starts tomorrow. And for the Mets/Braves, the MLB screwed up last Wednesday by not pushing the night game to the early afternoon despite the weather forecast.
For the Mets that meant their top pitchers (Manae, Pederson) went this weekend against the Brewers
If the Braves and Mets split today, all three teams will end up with 89-73 records, but the Snakes will be out because they didn't do as well in head-to-head match-ups with the other two teams.
“If the Mets and braves each forfeit one game they both go to the playoffs and don’t have to burn their pitching.”
Very good point. If the Mets and Braves split the doubleheader, they’ll both get into the playoffs: the Braves play the Padres and the Mets play the Brewers.
