The man is correct. Unfortunately, he is doing business in a cesspool.
You are probably correct and he looks like he’s a good business owner. I’d buy his coffee before I’d ever buy Starbucks
I don’t think being cruel to anyone is the right answer. Most of these people are coming to create a better life for themselves. Other countries know this and send their criminals and mental patients.
I don’t give a flip why they are coming they are not supposed to be here
If you think other countries tolerate this nonsense you are wrong
In 1970s Houston late one night when all the 7/11s were transitioning to being taken over by foreigners I had had enough of not being able to understand clerks and so that night I said (not asked) to the guy, “how long have you been in America?” expecting him to say 2 or 3 years, but when he said 9 months, all I could reply back was “Oh, well for 9 months you speak pretty good English”.
LOL!
I spent nine years in Italy and never fully mastered Italian (in my defense English was the language at work). I guess I have no gift for languages!
Anyone recall 0 lamenting the lack of language skills of Americans? Oddly 0 only speaks 1 language IIRC

One of the worst jobs I ever had was working in a Chinese Restaurant. Those are some nasty people and by that I mean MacDonalds is a cleaner place. I know every FReeper who has ever worked at MacDonalds just cringed too.
The cook had such a think accent that I could not tell if he was speaking English to me or Chinese. There were times I could not understand him and would say so. He would just say “yor stupid” funny he knew how to say that in English.
Just before Covid the city council ordered that building be torn down. The restaurant had been closed since the middle 90’s but the building was falling apart. When I say falling apart bricks were falling down on the sidewalk. They never cared for the building when I worked there and after I left. Online somewhere is video of them tearing it down by the local news. I watched it live while eating a pizza and listening to Kurt Dogg’s “Get it low” on repeat.
The place had roaches and rats when I worked there. One day the owner’s wife ask me why I don’t kill the roaches. I did not say it but I was thinking “bitch I’m a waitress not an exterminator”. The owner would make me check each plate before putting them on the buffet because one time I found a roach inside them. Also when I would return white rice uneaten? The cook would take it and put it back in the main pot to re-heat it for the next customer.
I don’t eat Chinese anymore. Also I don’t ever order rice no matter where I go.
McDonalds and fast food chains were always famous for being spotlessly clean, the best in the industry.
yum...
What the heck is “doing dasher?” I thought the dasher was that thing around the rink you hold on to while you’re learning to skate.
Most of the people who rob banks are trying to create a better life for themselves. Most of the 19th Century Robber Barons who exploited (legal) immigrants were trying to create a better life for themselves, too.
Expecting immigrants to learn English is not being cruel.
When I visited Colombia, I didn't expect them to cater to me by demanding that they all speak English. It's their country. It's up to me to learn their language and culture, not impose mine on them.
My grandparents came over from the old country not knowing any English. They were admitted through Ellis Island and when they settled down, learned English.
In those days, people considered it rude to speak a language others didn't know in front of them.
I worked at a McDonalds as a teen in the 70’s. They were very vigilant about keeping the place clean. In fact the corporate office would do surprise visits posing as customers to spot check and make sure that things were run the way they expected as far as cleanliness and quality of the food being sold. I never saw a rodent or cockroach in the store in the over 2 years I worked there. The floors were swept and mopped in the grill and dining areas multiple times during business hours. The cooking oil in the fry vats filtered regularly and changed after a specific period of time. The Taylor shake and ice cream machines were broken down and sanitized nightly, along with all of the trays, and cooking utensils. Grills cleaned to brand spanking new looking at the end of the night. Maybe they have deteriorated now with today’s slackers in the workforce.
Wendy's used to be top-notch when Dave Thomas was running the corporation. But it's a different deal today.
Yes, Dave and Ray Kroc are probably spinning in their graves now.
I worked at KFC as a teenager and it was very clean as well. If I was on an opening crew in a Saturday or Sunday morning, we spent an hour cleaning and disinfecting everything - counters, floors, grills, tables, etc. before we opened the store. The milkshake machines were washed/sanitized daily and the soft drink dispensers were thoroughly cleaned three times a week.
Not sure what it’s like these days.
That's okay. Neither did they.
