Column: The 2024 Chicago White Sox are the worst team in MLB history, a record in futility that was well-earned (But wait!)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 28 September 2024 | Paul Sullivan

After listening all week to Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz, manager Grady Sizemore and players discussing their feelings about the inevitable modern-era record for losses the team finally broke Friday night in Detroit, one word seemed to be missing.

Frustrating? Difficult? Disappointing? Painful?

No, we heard those descriptions a few dozen times.

The word I never heard uttered was “unacceptable,” as in “this loss was unacceptable.”

Time and again we heard about the bad breaks, as if the Sox had a monopoly on bad luck. We get it. They were millimeters short of a win on Aug. 28 when Texas Rangers left fielder Travis Jankowski’s brilliant leaping catch robbed Andrew Vaughn of a walk-off home run. The Sox bullpen has blown 35 saves. If only a handful of those went the other way, the Sox would’ve avoided going down in history as the worst team ever.

In the original 8-team leagues, you played each of 7 opponents 22 times, for 154.

When they expanded to 10, you played 9 opponents 18 times each, or 162. It’s stayed at 162 since, despite ever-increasing layers of playoffs that have occasionally caused the season to extend into November.

There is nothing any more sacrosanct about 162 than about 154.

Sabotaged would be a better word than tanked in this case.

We did it in basketball too. Proud origin of the “Stepien Rule” and an early adopter of a DEI team.

When Maris broke Ruth's record in 1961, there were a lot of people who didn't want it to happen...many were old enough to remember when Ruth hit 60 home runs in 1927. I think the issue of 154 games only came up because people didn't want anyone to beat Ruth's record.

Ruth's record has now been broken 7 more times, but the only one which may be legitimate (no performance-enhancing drugs) was Aaron Judge in 2022 with 62.

No player who beat Ruth's 60-home-runs mark is in the Hall of Fame. I suppose Aaron Judge may be after he retires.

They still beat the Braves two out of three. Shut them out.

Walmart says it’s out of stock and if it was it would cost (with shipping) $12.30.

Might be worth it.

Ironically, enough every single game, I attended, the Red Sox lost against the White Sox. Every. Single. Game.

You suck. ;-)

Back in '84 when the Tigers won the WS, they started the season 35-5...I was at wins 34 and 35 in Anaheim. They went up to Seattle and promptly got swept in 4 games...played pretty much .500 baseball the rest of the way...but managed to capture the title.

That seems like a thousand years ago. The players are now old men...like me.

You don’t know the half of it man. Do you wanna know how many patriots games were lost because I showed up?

The only team that consistently wins when I’m there is the Celtics

I think what you’re looking for, specifically is Bertman’s Original Ballpark Mustard”.

Its what they’ve always served at the games.
