MASSIVE Gas Station Chain In Utah, California & Nevada Announces 1,000 Closures! (They're making a huge mistake)

One of America's LARGEST gas station chains is gearing up to close over 1,000 locations nationwide between 2024 and 2025. Yes, you read that right—over 1,000! But don’t worry, they’re not just pulling the plug and leaving us high and dry. This move is part of a massive shift as the company pivots toward the future of transportation. Who’s behind this gas station shakeup?

WHO’S CLOSING SHOP? Shell, the oil and gas giant we all know, is planning to close a significant number of its gas stations, with California, Utah, and Nevada set to feel the impact. California alone has more than 1,100 Shell locations, while Nevada boasts over 1,000. Utah isn’t off the hook either, with 54 stations scattered across the state. So, what's the deal? Shell is all-in on the electric vehicle revolution. They’re aiming to install around 70,000 EV charging stations by 2025 and an ambitious 200,000 by 2030!

WHAT ABOUT THE SURVIVORS? For those Shell stations that escape the chopping block, things are looking up. These remaining stations will get fancy upgrades, from spruced-up retail spaces to expanded EV charging options and more convenient offerings. So, if your local Shell is sticking around, it’s about to get a serious facelift.

WHICH STATIONS ARE GETTING AXED? So far, Shell hasn’t spilled the beans on which specific locations will be shuttered. The announcement is still under wraps, leaving many to speculate that California, with its dense concentration of Shell stations, will likely see the most closures. Nevada and Utah may also see some of their Shell spots disappear.

Back in 2023, Shell USA bought out the charging company Volta, adding over 3,000 charging stations across 31 states to their portfolio. They’ve got another 3,400 stations currently in the works. So, while some Shell stations are bidding us farewell, it’s clear the company is steering full speed ahead into the electric future.

How much is in government subsidies are we talking?? Heck they won’t have to sell a watt to make money as long as the subsidies floe! and when the government ‘tit’ funds dry the will liquidate the stations and get back most of their investment back, A win - win for them!

I predict they’ll build all these EV stations and they’ll find out that no one is buying EVs and they’ll lose billions of dollars, just like GM and Ford. They’ll be called the “Bud Light” of oil companies.

If they don't build generating capacity to power all these charging stations, the idea is dead as a door-nail anyway.

In the 1950s, we filled up almost exclusively at Shell stations, although on occasion, we would visit a Richfield or Flying A station.

I don’t see many in AZ. I usually gas up at Costco, Circle K or QT.

Most of the Shell stations around the FR HQ area have been converted to Sinclair stations over the last few years...may be a small part of this “plan”.

Yep, that is all we use in our vehicles, Shell premium. Any other gas our vehicles run like crap. I forget which vehicle it was, but quite a while back one of them started running terrible. Hesitation, and sort of a knocking sound. Took it to our little local mechanic shop and the owner, Mike, said he couldn’t find a problem....asked what kind of gas we used? He told us to start using only Shell premium and all your problems will clear right up. I think it only took one full tank of the premium and all was good. Mike was right, Shell premium, our vehicles purr like kittens.

Shell may be attempting to grab all the EV business in states where EVs are feasible. .....little snow, moderate winters in the majority of the region.

And, grab some govt. handouts before Trump arrives.

There is a market for EVs, it’s just so limited from an operational standpoint.

All the negatives still stand and Shell will regret it.

I see Buc’ees expanding into Nevada and Utah.

If they are smart, the beaver will stay out of California.

“there is some unholy collaboration and skullduggery with the federales.”

You nailed it. The car makers are pulling back from EVs everywhere you look. Yet one major oil company is going all-in on EVs? Does not make any sense at all.

Imagine the sales they’ll get when people have 30-45 minutes to kill while their car charges instead of 5-10 minutes to fill the tank with liquid fuel.

They’re following the trend of building massive rest stop / shopping / gas stations. The local shops were kept going by auto repairs, then small convenience stores, but now can’t stay solvent.

A massive fail idea their overhead will be to high to compete.

“Hmm...what am I not getting?”

Only you can answer that. Or maybe your wife could?
