Groom’s Banned Wedding Songs List Sparks Social Media Debate
EuroWeekly News ^ | 24 Sep 2024 | Letara Draghia

Weddings are meant to be a joyous celebration, but one man’s controversial list of banned songs has sparked quite the debate online. After sharing a list of songs he plans to avoid at his wedding on X, Harry had the internet up in arms.

Among the banned songs were wedding classics like Mr. Brightside and Sweet Caroline, which are known for getting people on the dancefloor.

In a surprising twist, UK pop singer Olly Murs chimed in on the debate. Murs, known for his upbeat hits like Dance with Me Tonight, playfully suggested “Anything by Olly Murs.” It prompted Harry to jokingly respond: “I’ll allow troublemaker at my wedding – that’s an absolute banger.”

Many social media users sympathised with wedding DJs who face the monumental task of creating a playlist that pleases everyone. One commenter noted, “It’s hard to curate a playlist that makes the wedding party happy and moves the crowd across multiple generations.” The challenge of balancing taste, nostalgia, and crowd-pleasers like Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen is no small feat. Another commenter pointed out, “Banning Sweet Caroline at a wedding is kind of a crime, actually.”

This light-hearted debate touches on a broader trend of couples personalising their wedding day in unconventional ways. Whether it’s banning certain songs or avoiding traditional elements altogether, modern weddings are increasingly personalised. But for some, the idea of removing beloved wedding hits is sacrilege. One commenter humorously suggested that by the time all the “annoying” songs are banned, the only music left would be “niche death metal tracks.”

While some agreed with the bans, others were quick to defend classic tunes. One user said, “There is no power on earth that would stop me from playing Don’t Stop Me Now at my wedding!” Other songs that have been added to the groom’s blacklist include Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud and Perfect, both often criticised for being overplayed at weddings.

How to create a wedding playlist

If you’re curating your own wedding playlist, think about the cultural expectations of your guests. Some songs, like Sweet Caroline, might have universal appeal, while others might not resonate as well with an international crowd.

Whether you decide to go with crowd-pleasers or to create a unique playlist, this conversation shows how personal music preferences can stir up unexpected controversy. So, what’s the verdict for your wedding? Will you keep the classics, or is it time to make your own list of banned tunes?

Planning your own wedding in Spain? Here’s all you need to know. Oh, and here’s how much it should cost.

Several years ago we were at a wedding where the DJ played “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.” We didn’t walk out; we cracked up laughing. Flash forward three years, and they filed for divorce.

My parents' wedding featured these tunes:

Until--Claudia Muzio (1918)

Through the Years--Nat Shilkret & the Victor Orchestra, vocal by Nelson Eddy (1936)

I would likely use these for my own wedding if I can ever find the right girl to marry. I used "Through the Years" when I made a video about my parents.

For a video about my brother's wedding, I seriously considered using The Wedding of the Painted Doll by James Burrows (1929), from my favorite movie musical, "Hollywood Revue of 1929," but my mother convinced me to use instead, No Other Love by Jo Stafford (1950)--and she was right. My brother, his bride, and her family loved that choice. She died of cancer a decade ago after 20 years of a happy marriage, and I still think of her every time I hear that song.

Actually, allowing Neil Diamond at a wedding is a real crime.

Could be worse:

“Uncle Ernie” by the Who

“The Trial” by Pink Floyd (e.g., “Baaaaaaaaaabe!”)

And for songs that are absolutely all-time top 500 smashes:

“Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones. (Somehow, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” seems even crueler.)

“Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin

“Stupid Girl” by Garbage

“You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi

“It’s a Sin” by the Pet Shop Boys

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler (Your soul is dead?)

“Stan” by Eminem (Fanboy abducts girl in murder-suicide)

“Roxanne” by the Police (Calling the bride a whore?)

and why not go for broke? “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC

50 years experience as a radio and wedding DJ speaking. For success at either, you play the hits. Your Spotify playlist may be great for your boat, backyard bar-b-que or club party, but will it keep the dance floor packed all night with your guests? You’ve asked family and friends to give up their Saturday to sit through a ceremony , most likely the same format as the one last attended, cocktails, dinner and sit through overly long BM & MOH speeches , cake cutting and formal dances to get to the actual party. This hopefully is the most fun they have all night for their investment, time and money, in your event. At this point the party is your thank you to them. Let them have fun hearing “That Funky Music or Uptown Funk” for the billionth time.

If I have a closed playlist, I make sure the guests know the Groom or Bride chose the music. Usually I end up with the couple telling me to do what I know to do. You don’t restrict the tools of your car mechanic or physician. The music is the DJ’s tools. Let them operate.

Neil Diamond? He should burn in hell.

There, changed it for you
True story, about to get a Colonoscopy and pre-meds, curtains drawn closed, and I overheard my woman doctor telling a nurse that she hated Neil Diamond music. After the procedure, on wake up checkup by my doctor, she ssks “How are you feeling?” I reply, “” i’m pretty good except for this ‘Sweet Caroline, dun dun daah ‘ song stuck in my head “🤭🤣😜. She did laugh after all.

He had such a good voice. But really, he was a jazz pianist.

I saw an article that was an interview with a British DJ, and they asked him which song will empty the dance floor, and he said Gold by Spandau Ballet.

Do you have a song up your sleeve if you want to empty the floor. Or conversely, on to liven things up, after you had to play a terrible request?

Yes. That was one of the three great Motown songs with words written by Roger Penzabene after he found out his wife was cheating on him, and before he killed himself. Marvin Gaye also has a good version.

The other two songs were I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You) and I Wish It Would Rain. He took his life 10 days after the later came out, and the other two were released the next year.

I always wonder what his wife thought.
