Pettipiece lost her prestigious job as a result and says her career and reputation have been ruined.
Happens to everyone, right, that they “forget” to scan items adding up to $67...
Too bad she wasn’t in California where it’s A-OK to steal $950 worth of merchandise each day and no one will do a thing about it...
I forgot to scan a Rolex and a Jaguar... What was I thinking?
Here’s a suggestion... If you’re that forgetful stick to a checkout with an employee doing the scanning. If they forget to scan it, it’s on them... If you forget to scan it... It’s theft, pure and simple.
F this headline.
possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.
Are you a shill for The Mail? Here’s a better excerpt.
“Canadian athlete Meaggan Pettipiece, 48, was arrested on March 28 in Indiana for theft, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance”.
If she truely didn’t mean to steal at least we know why she did and why she was arrested and ruined.
I guess I don’t quite understand. You move things from the cart, scan them, and put them into the bags. It’s a three step process.
Ok, so she forgot to scan a few things. I wonder if she left stuff in her cart? Or did she not bag some items? It’s seems that if she were going to forget a step in the process those things would have happened as well.
I figure Walmart also has cameras over all of its self checkout lanes so they could document this woman’s confusion and or distraction. I also wonder if she had confusion or distraction the last few times she went through this lane. That might have led to the folks at Walmart having some “people” on hand to assist her.
Her being an Olympian really has little to do with this.
About 1/2 the time I use self checkout the stupid bar code is not recognized
And they have to go have an act of Congress to get the price. I hate them.
Kamala’s Inflation is forcing otherwise fine people to cheat and steal.
IN fairness, $67 of ham these days is about two slices of country ham.
The sign at my local WalMart read:
Scan and Go
It didn’t read:
Scan, PAY, and Go
Forgot? Sure.... And she was charged for stuff the police found in her purse!
I’m assuming she was stealing. However, I make it a point when using these self-checkout aisles to make sure an employee comes over to “help” me so that there are no misunderstandings.
It was during the arrest and subsequent search of Pettipiece that police uncovered the vapes and nausea medication.
'It was so ridiculous,' Pettipiece said, adding that she didn't realize the self-checkout scanner hadn't read some of the items.
The former athlete added that the vapes did not contain nicotine or THC, and the pills were a prescription belonging to an assistant coach who asked her to look after them when they headed to a softball game.
'We both forgot about them,' she said.
BS meter is maxed. Thief alert!
Rest of the story:
“Pettipiece was charged March 28 in Porter County, Ind., for theft, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance after an incident at a WalMart self-checkout.”
The DM article is horrible, from the headline to the content. She didn’t ‘lose’ her job: She resigned, but one would have to read all the way through that tripe to grasp that and the fact that she had someone else’s prescription and 2 marijuana vapes in her purse, which is still illegal in Porter County, IN.
She’s a canadian wokester. A dunce. Superspreader of the true pandemic.
But I won’t argue with the fact that it should be mandatory to post signage - at a minimum a screen for which the customer must “agree” - warning customers that they may be prosecuted for theft if they fail to scan items at self-checkout. Only the dishonest and utterly stupid wouldn’t notice an item not scanning and/or ask for help.
Such signage would help compel stores to maintain human checkers for those of us who prefer to manage liability than be subject to it.
If the customer makes a mistake, they call the cops. If an employee makes a mistake, nothing happens.
Another reason why I don’t use self checkout.
While many are focusing on the self-checkout incident, the bigger issue here is the drug-related charges. Meaggan Pettipiece wasn’t just dealing with a checkout mistake; she was also charged with possession of marijuana and a controlled substance, which likely contributed to the downward spiral of her life. Even though the charges were dropped, the damage to her career and reputation had already been done.
For me I do not use self-checkout for this reason.
