A boy is back home and on the mend after his father kidnapped him in May and set a car on fire with the child still inside.
Bennett Dornellas, 3, suffered third-degree burns on 90 percent of his body, but was still pictured smiling in the days before his release Monday.
His father, 32-year-old Joshua Bennett Dornellas, was arrested after leading deputies on a chase that began in South Caroline and ended in Georgia with the car engulfed in flames.
It began with the violent assault of Bennett and his mother at the family's home in Anderson County, cops said - leading Dornellas to kidnap the boy and drive him down I-85 across state lines.
Georgia State police soon became involved, and Dornellas eventually set the truck he was driving ablaze before jumping out at speeds of 55 mph. Bennett was left inside to burn, but deputies were miraculously able to save his life.
Four months later, Bennett is back home, and his dad is being held without bond.

Anyone remember that case from 1983? Dave Dave as burned by his dad in a motel room. Charles Rothenberg, Dave's father spent less than seven years of a 13-year sentence in prison for attempted murder. I sure hope the creep that did this to little Bennett gets more time in prison.
Dave Dave passed in 2018
God forgive me for what I’m thinking right now
Why do I get the feeling we are all thinking it?
I recall that case. To be honest, for the Boy’s sake, I was hoping he had peacefully passed away by now. That’s no kind of life to lead, nothing but ongoing pain day in day out.
I’m sure He understands.
I’m with you on that.
He lived to be 42 years old. He died from complications of pneumonia.
Friends say he was a great person and even helped other burn victims deal with what happened to them.
He would have helped little Bennett if he were still alive.
The article says the perp father is facing up to 20 years in prison. Why not life without parole? It’s perfectly clear that when he gets out he’s gonna go after the family again. He deserves death, no less.
He won’t get the death penalty but I’ll be shocked if he gets 20 years and/or is not let out in less time like Dave Dave’s dad was
All I can think of is that women should not be allowed to vote nor be leaders because we aren’t as good as men....
I only know CA law, and they’ll stack the charges as best they can, but unfortunately that sounds about right. Attempted murder for openers; battery with great bodily injury; mayhem. That may be about it as far as the attack itself, plus felony evasion, etc. But state law may require some charges to run concurrently rather than consecutively. We’ll have to leave it to his fellow prisoners to take out the trash
Attempted murder carries 1 to 30 years in Georgia

The “father” should have been sentenced to death and then immediately executed. Burning the “father” alive complicates the simplicity of sudden death.
The father should be roasted slowly till death.
Don’t be so hard on yourself, we all have flaws.
As usual the DM leaves a lot out...
So the perp had been reported for leaving the kids home alone, domestic violence, the ex had an order of protection out on the perp.
Looks like local LE, CPS, and the DA’s office failed this family completely.
Actually, this creep deserves to be hanged in front of the Anderson County courthouse, but nobody does that kind of justice anymore.
Rothenberg sentenced 25 years to life under three-strike law

I understand prisoners don’t take lightly to convicts that hurt children.
Some lunatic judge will give him two years for this crime, and another lunatic judge will then order joint unsupervised custody, putting the mother in the poor house trying to fight it legally.
Also kidnapping, unless he was there to pick him up. But to paraphrase the old joke, "Who do you have to kill to get executed around here?"
