Windows defender is all you need. It is free with windows
You don’t need anything for Apple. They have very little malware out there, and their OS includes stuff. Really the AV market has mostly sold paranoia for decades, unless you’re doing dumb things on the internet (like downloading browser add-ons that aren’t filtered by the browser company), your chances of getting malware are slim to none. Base level protection that’s provided by all modern OSes is more than sufficient. Unless you spend a lot of time in the internet’s red light district you do not need a 2nd condom.
And the obvious free option that has been trouble free and rock solid against viruses for going on ten years now. No antivirus at all required... The elephant in the room... Linux.
Bingo!!!
Why do you need any antivirus? It’s stupid. I have had dozens of computers and I haven’t installed any antivirus software in over 10 years.
I tried McAfee, but did not find it user-friendly at all. I really have no idea whether it was effective or not, since its user interface was so confusing.
VPN is your friend.
Get a Mac !
That alone shows how insecure modern Windows PC systems are. All of the automatic update features enable some 3rd party vendor to just go ahead and install a new program on your computer.
Hopefully everyone that does that is as friendly as Kaspersky....

I've been trying Ultra AV for a week and just took it off of my computer.
First, it just deletes things it thinks are viruses without giving me the option to review and keep it. I can go and see the report and restore it and white list it for the future.
Second, the UI is overly simplistic and, in my opinion, a bit amateurish.
Third, I can't run some programs while it is running, and I don't have the patience to have to track down why.
So it's gone.
For now, I'm going to see if I can get along with just Windows Defender for basic virus protection and firewall, and use the malware/adware protections of NordVPN for everything else. I do hope that Kaspersky will let me keep the Password Manager running because I've gotten used to it, but I exported my passwords to a file just in case.
One thing I will miss is the secure browser feature for when I do banking and other financial transactions. It was nice to have a protected browser that prevented screen scraping and keylogging when entering account/login numbers and credit card and bank account numbers on these important websites.
I may move to something more powerful in the future if I find that something is lacking.
