Child-free spaces, dirty looks on planes and ‘breeders’: Why people seem so annoyed by kids

CNN —

In some corners of society, there appears to be a shift in the way people talk about kids.

Every so often, a provocative social media post sets off predictably polarizing discourse about the presence of children in daily life. There was the woman who snarkily suggested that toddlers should be leashed. There was the guy who proudly posed outside of an establishment that declared itself “dog friendly” and “child free,” and the person who defended him by proclaiming that it was “fine and normal to dislike children.”

In certain online communities, people sometimes express these attitudes even more jarringly, using terms such as “crotch goblins” for kids and “breeders” for parents.

These attitudes show up offline, too. The issue of crying babies on planes is a frequent source of conflict, with some passengers glaring, yelling or more recently, locking the offending child in the lavatory to admonish them. And as people who seek to avoid loud or unruly children make known their preferences for childfree restaurants, grocery stores and flights, more businesses are catering to them.

The implication (joking or otherwise) is that children are a nuisance and adults shouldn’t have to endure them if they don’t want to.

The brazenness with which people express this attitude, even if it’s more a meme than anything else, has an effect on parents. Some parents (almost always mothers) are so attuned to the possibility that their child might inconvenience others that they constantly apologize for normal kid behavior. Others pass out ear plugs and candy on flights.

Mariah Maddox, a freelance writer based in Ohio, has yet to fly with her 3-year-old because she can’t predict how he’ll react and doesn’t want to experience judgment from fellow passengers.

“I’m not annoyed with ALL children. Just badly behaved children, and parents who won’t parent.”

Several times I’ve been to a restaurant, or a graduation, or flown on a plane, or any other activity and there’s a screaming, rambunctious kid the parents won’t control. I have four and we always kept them in check. Mom was the tough one, she’d smack ‘em in public.

Mom was the tough one, she’d smack ‘em in public.

Try doing that today, and while most folks will applaud, some Karen or your kid will report you to child protective services and/or their school and you might lose your kid(s) and/or be arrested.

Spanking areas should be located at very public areas such as malls, town squares, etc.

Discipline of children should be allowed only in these public areas. The embarrassment to the kids should reduce the need for disciplining them.

Should a parent get carried away and take it too far, beating the kid, other parents and/or cops can pull the parent off before damage is done.

There should be pillories and stocks at the spanking area for those who don't "get it".

You’re right, some buttinski would make an issue of it. Luckily for us, that was long time ago and our kids are all grown now. Times have changed and sometimes not for better.

Children in public places are allowed to behave in ways that would have been unthinkable when I was a child. It’s not the child’s fault it is the parent’s.

Exactly.

Mr mm and I had to stop for lunch on a trip once with our small kids, all un der 7.

We got a table in an almost empty room where there was one older couple eating. They kind of rolled their eyes and sighed when we came in and looked resigned to having their meal ruined.

But we raised our kids to know how to behave in public and at restaurants and I made it very clear to them that if they wanted to continue to eat out, which was a treat, they'd better behave or no more.

By the time the other couple left, they came over and complemented us on how well behaved the kids were.

Crying kids especially babies, on planes can't usually be helped especially if the cause is the change in pressure on the ear drum causing pain. It can be excruciating.

If it's just spoiled brats, I have no patience.

I also love being child free and have not regretted my decision for a single second. At least twice a day I catch myself saying “I’m SOglad I don’t have kids” when someone’s kid is screeching in a grocery store or bookstore or running around a restaurant like a wild Indian.

I have grand children many nieces and nephews and now many great nieces and nephews.

I enjoy well behaved children.

Children or who are let run wild and have no training or manners. are a PITA.

“We all know how babies are made so avoid that act and you will be child free.”

“I get it when I can” is the new celibacy.

My mother made me HELP HER kick my ass. “Go get the wooden spoon.” They had to clear cut an Amazon rain forest and displace at least one indigenous population to replace the number of wooden spoons that mom broke over my ass. An I deserved every one.

The term “Breeder” is from the Gay Mafia.
I first heard it in 2005 from a militant homo.
It was NOT said in a positive manor.
They were told to stop using it until they got further in their agenda.

Dinks as well.

Children who can behave are ok.

Neither me or my wife are parental material for a lot of reasons.

as long as they don't get that way by having abortions.

With several million abortions every year since 1973 the number of childless women due to abortion is quite large. Guilty consciences lead to all manner of odd behaviors ... like, for example, hating children.

Trust me; I get it.

“Children who can behave are ok.”

We’ve noticed a common thread among well-behaved kids, i.e., they’re homeschooled.
