Shohei Ohtani first 50/50 player in major league history

MIAMI -- Shohei Ohtani became the first player in baseball history to reach the 50/50 club on Thursday, and he did so in dominant fashion -- with two home runs and two stolen bases in a five-hit game that could clinch a postseason spot for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani opened the game with a line-drive double off the wall in right-center field against Miami Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, then picked up his 50th steal of the season by swiping third base. A second-inning single was followed by stolen base No. 51. Ohtani then added a two-run double in the third -- before getting thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple -- and followed with a 438-foot home run into LoanDepot Park's second deck in the sixth for his 49th home run.

Ohtani came to bat again with runners on second and third and two outs in the seventh inning, prompting many to wonder whether the Marlins would pitch to him. They did -- and Ohtani delivered, taking a 1-2 curveball from Mike Baumann and lofting it over the fence in left-center field for his 50th home run of the season.

Three homers, 6 for 6, and 10 RBIs might go down as the greatest single day hitting feat.

Like Fernando Tatis' TWO grand slams in the same inning?

Two grand slams ate a function of three men on base. All he did was hit two home runs.

Here is the entire list of players before today with 17 total bases in a game. Shohei Ohtani is the first to do it without hitting four home runs. He is the only one to steal a base (he swiped two).

On the day he went 50/50, Ohtani had one of the greatest games in MLB history.

“At 6-feet-4, Ohtani is faster than most players—and certainly faster than most designated hitters. But he lacks the elite speed of Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who leads the majors with 62 stolen bases this year.

What Ohtani can do better than almost anyone else is pick his spots. He tends to rack up steals off baseball’s weakest catchers and early in the hitter’s count, when the pitcher is more likely to throw an off-speed pitch. As a result, he’s been thrown out only four times this year.

It’s one area where Ohtani’s pitching background may help. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about holding baserunners at first—and has allowed only 12 stolen bases in more than 480 career innings—he’s uniquely in tune with how pitchers behave.”

they brought those young guys up...and just went on a tear. They would be a dangerous team to play in the playoffs

Ohtani is a great player...but he refuses to learn English. Very annoying.

When he pitches, is he allowed to bat as the DH?

“Seems like a stupid question, but is Ohtani really fast or just smart with good timing?”

Not sure. Maybe we can ask his bookie… /s

Just a reminder that last year the Rangers were the 6th seed in the AL playoffs.

Looks like his 3rd MVP (also had a 2nd place finish)

The WAR stat says that Judge is having a much better season.

I wonder if he’s like Yu Darvish, didn’t speak English the first few years, then all of sudden he started speaking English like he’s been speaking it all of his life.

I always thought Willie Mays was the most talented baseball player to ever live, but this guy Ohtani is starting to make me think we're seeing the greatest ever right now.

Smart with good timing.

He’s only been caught four times.

Five tools has fielding as well, maybe pitching qualifies him.
