The organic farm shop is a paradise for wealthy Germans. Behind the scenes, we pick and chop vegetables until we’re on the point of collapse ... they guaranteed work for at least 10 hours a day and that I would be paid €6.20 (£5.27) an hour. I would have to pay the agency a fee of €200 and a one-off sum of €105 for my bed. I would buy and cook my own food. They also told me to bring boots and rubber gloves.
...
The contract I sign on about day three probably corresponds to the German labour code. But I receive two work report sheets. On one I write down the actual hours worked and on the other, the official sheet, I sign those that are recorded: a maximum of 10 hours of work a day, six days a week. I’d already heard about double reporting, but here they present it to me as a matter of course. No one explains what is going on. According to the official record, I might work until 4pm today, and there was no work at all on Sunday.
... One of the worst things about this job is that no one can tell you when the shift will end. “Please understand,” one of the women replied when I ask if we would get Sunday afternoon off, “that there are no working hours, there is no Monday to Friday. Here they just tell you to go to work, and you never know when it’s going to end.”
... Not only is the work physically demanding, but you are on your feet for 14 hours a day.
It’s strange how normal this weird existence seems after a while. Maybe that’s because by the evening, everyone is completely exhausted.

Germans have a history of using Poles for slave labor.
The Southerner
Got it on DVD! Good movie! Hard time watching it as it is so true.
I remember reading of a land owner who let out his fields to sharecroppers. When they had the crops planted and growing he would force them off the property and take in the crops for himself. Dirty business.
A landowner did that to dad. Mom was so mad she went out and dug up the entire garden they had planted.
Exactly. If we paid $100 an hour to pick lettuce. We would be turning people away. Heck I would be out there picking lettuce.
But lettuce would cost I don’t know $20 a head.
Pay $7 an hour and you have few willing to do the work.
Somewhere between $7 and $100 is a solid number that will attract good workers happy for the job. The price of lettuce will reach its appropriate point.

Or you develop a technology to pick the lettuce without the need to hire pickers.
Yes re technology.
But it’s not a magic wand. Someone must design, build,
Deliver, service, repair, and operate it.
Und dann vee vill dig zum more, ja!
Nothing illegal is ever ‘’good’’.
No it wouldn't. Do the math.
The math:
Let's say a picker picks ( i am making these number up because the real numbers are hidden from us, try searching for it ) 300 heads of lettuce per hour.
The picker makes $15/hr, so the per head cost is 15/300 or 5 cents per head.
Now lets give him $100/hr, the per head cost is 100/300 or 33 cents per head.
So lettuce would cost 33 - 5 = 27 cents more per head retail. See how it works?
I wondered where you were central...so glad you chimed in with your brilliant analysis. Could you please educate us what a “decent wage” is for picking apples or peaches? You can use numbers based on what you see SC peaches available at the VA farmers markets or just pull them from wherever you store your vast knowledge of farming and economics.
Sure I was just speaking in general terms.

Oh! You were making it up? NO ONE COULD TELL! Especially when you got to the 300 heads of lettuce an hour. 5 heads a minute is pretty ambitious, but it would be great to see you do it, and not just for 1 hour, but 4...then lunch hour, then back at it for another 4. 😉 McDonald’s need more consultants like you, telling them if employees would just make 10 times more burgers in an hour minimum wage could be $100/hour at all fast food restaurants. I see how it works 💪 /sarc tag likely necessary for ya
Greed kills. Kills people, souls, nations.
Ya, maybe. I don’t know any abattoirs in New England that have H2A help cutting meat, but I’m sure it happens in much bigger facilities...is it better than illegals at Tyson? Maybe? At least you know they are here and will be leaving and not sucking off the rest of us. I’m just looking to end the excuse for illegals the best way I can think of, it makes me sick. I had someone ask me straight faced if I was going to hire any of the “newcomers” to MA, I said I’d buy them a ticket home first, spit.
The new slaver class. Order your new Lexus yet?
Crops ripen and must be picked as fast as possible once they do.
They won’t wait for your weekend break.
Did something happen to you at a high school job or something we should know about? You always seem unhinged and overly vitriolic when this topic comes up. And, try as you might, you cannot pin illegals on me, NEVER have hired any, nope, not one. It is why I often post about the guest worker program as the reason why there is NO NEED for illegal immigration.
