There are rules of engagement for a reason and violating them for expediency is unacceptable.

I think Israel took the gloves off Oct 7 last year. Your Lt Calley comment is a not a good analogy. Calley killed known civilians because they likely harbored VC, even though they likely harbored them under duress in many cases. That was wrong. This brilliant scheme booby trapped a command and control system with enemy combatants as intended users. A better analogy would be bombing German civilians in Dresden to destroy German industry, but that was even more indiscriminate than what the Mossad appears to have pulled off here.

The city of Dresden was leveled because the Allies didn't have more accurate bombing. The Army Air Corps went to daylight bombing raids despite the staggering losses, in order to increase their accuracy. The United States has spent billions on precision bombing, starting prior to the Norden bombsight.

In this case the delivery was very accurate but there was no assurance that the correct targets were holding the device and that no innocents nearby would be harmed.

Any one of those holding the device could have been an innocent bystander, a storekeeper, a doctor or an EMT helping someone with an unrelated medical condition.

Any one of those holding the device, guilty or not, could have been holding a child or filling a car with gasoline.
