Vodka is perhaps the spirit with the least personality. It doesn't bring much by way of tasting notes to the table, but when you're looking for a clean, clear liquor to serve a boozy kick without dominating the flavor profile of your drink, vodka is what you want to reach for. Around the world, vodkas are made from grains, potatoes, sugar cane, and even maple sap. There are some pretty cheap ones on the market, leaving you wondering which of them are worth the buy?

Bottom shelf is a term that can come with some stigma, but here we use it to simply mean affordable. If you don't want to spend big bucks on fancy liquor, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice quality. There's quite a spectrum on the bottom shelf, so we've spoken to some experts to get a sense of the best options at the low end of the price range. They all agree that vodka isn't something you need to spend a lot of money on.

Try Reigncane out of California. Wonderful straight up or mixed with your favorite addition. Dirty Martinis will be a treat

We exclusively buy 13th colony vodka which is distilled in Plains, GA. Its inexpensive and I would put it up there with Stoli for martinis.

Titos is undrinkable. My SIL brought me some for Christmas one year and I made a martini with it and had to put it down the drain.

Absolute isn’t bad.

I let it go a year.

I get my vanilla beans from here for MUCH cheaper than the grocery stores, and they are nice and fresh and moist.

Wow, much cheaper indeed. Thanks for the tip.

A year?! I can't wait that long!

Plenty of cheap vodka from Eastern Europe that is very good. No question of that.
If you want the smoothness, Of Greg goose you can pay for it, but these are actually not bad

Oh yes, I've done that as well. Now I've got a great deal of "debris" floating around in my little bottle.

I hated State Stores in the 70’s. The one in Erie I went to was like a Soviet DMV office.

Lord, there was a joint out at 42nd and Market where you had to go up to the bullet proof glass, request what you wanted, slide your cash in the little gap, and they'd roll around your purchase in the bullet proof canister.

Almost put me off "the sauce" forever... Almost...
