California's controversial rare beast that vanished over 100 years ago stages shocking comeback: 'We've been invaded' (gray wolf)

An endangered predator has returned to California after vanishing more than 100 years ago.

At least 44 gray wolves have been spotted in the West Coast state, including a record-breaking 30 new pups this year alone, according to Axel Hunnicutt, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's gray wolf coordinator.

This is the biggest increase in a century, with the animals from seven different packs now in nine of the state's 58 counties, Marin Independent Journal reported.

But not everyone is happy about the return of the the gray wolf and are concerned about the risk to farmers' livestock.

Janna Gliatto, a manager at Table Rock Ranch in Monatgue, told SF Gate: 'Our hands are tied. We've been invaded'.

Gliatto explained how her livestock have been attacked by wolves but can't do anything about it.

The State Endangered Species Act dictates that a gray wolf can only be killed if it is threatening a human.

Rick Roberti, a cattle rancher in Plumas County, said one of his calves was killed by a wolf a quarter-mile from his house and that he has also been left with no recourse.

'It’s adding a lot of stress,' he told The Journal. 'Wolves chase the cattle. They stress them out. It gets frantic. They will run them for miles. The cattle stampede through fences.

'The wolf is going to spread throughout California. There’s nothing to stop it. They are going to move, and I think it’s going to be a crisis. We’re not set up for it.'

I hear they eat illegals. Could be climate change.

Shoot, shovel, shutup! They should be treated the same as Cayotes.

It is the California way! In the future California will be overrun with wolves as they now are with mountain lions after banning the hunting of such several years ago!

Yes, we are overrun with mountain lions, a Lt. with Calif Fish & Wildlife told me years ago that there are many more mountain lions in Calif than the biologists admit to. Now wolves, and there is talk of reintroducing Grizzly Bears too. Should be interesting for High Sierra hikers on the John Muir Trail.

So they vanished 100 years ago but we still have a Department of Fish and Wildlife’s gray wolf coordinator?

Very recent: “Colorado’s only wolf pack produced by released wolves is being removed from its Grand County location due to its repeated killing of livestock.”

Who could have known?!

Don’t bother. Shoot the wolf and then drop a cheap, disposable Saturday night special beside the animal. Ya don’t have to hide anything that way.

Well, that is another problem with wolves: high penalties for killing them. And because you never know for sure that the coyote in your sights is a coyote and not a small wolf, coyote are “protected” now as well.

Farmers of yesteryear worked hard to get rid of wolves, only to have them replaced.

For years Wis. outlawed coyote shooting during dear season to protect the wolves.

The rest of the year it shooting yotes was wide open.

They did away with that rule some years back.

Yotes are now shot on sight

I’d take a grey wolf over a liberal any day.

A grey wolf will attack your livestock and kill it, reducing your income. A liberal will attack your income directly without going to the trouble of using an animal intermediary.

Per California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 472(a), a coyote is categorized as a nongame mammal. This means you can hunt them. Coyotes may be taken at any time of the year and in any number.

My family (Basque) ranched sheep for four generations in Nevada and California. No one in the family raises sheep anymore. Government took away most of the grazing leases or made it too expensive in California.

Yotes were always a problem and cost a lot of money in lost revenue. You will never out hunt, shoot, or reduce the Coyote population they are too prolific and now live in urban areas. Can't imagine adding wolfs to that mix.

Countless times I have run into mountain lion while dear hunting. In California they kill more deer than hunters. Because they do not allow a dow hunt in California the young deer losses are too high because of too many Dows taking away forage in winter. States with dow hunts have much higher buck populations and healthier deer herds. I have run into Fish & Game officers that laugh and turn the other cheek per se when it comes to problem mountain lions. Can't imagine a decade from now with a wolf population in the lower Sierra's. Good luck with that, there are still many ranchers with cattle grazing leases in the Sierra Mountains.

There are so many yotes in California that anything from a rabbit to the largest four legged animal will be gone before morning and turned into yote scat. We still have some foothill property and at anytime with a screaming rabbit call in the evening can call down yotes to be dispatched. Like using a .308 loaded with Hornady nonleaded sintered tungsten jacketed hollow points that detonate on impact and is a great varmint bullet. Neighbor rancher appreciates the taking of any and all yotes that go after his calving cows in the herd.

It sounds like they are just trying to destroy absolutely everything people have built!

I am curious: when they raised the price of the grazing lands, did anything replace the sheep herding?
