Churchill had some boneheaded ideas such as viewing Italy as the “soft underbelly” of Europe. However, nothing can take away the fact that he rallied the British people when they were down to throwing empty Guinness bottles at the Nazis. And he did his part to rally a reluctant USA to stand up to Uncle Joe and wage the Cold War.

Italy surrendered in September of 1943 after a succession of catastrophic defeats. The soft underbelly only became hard when the Nazi tanks rolled in.
