The „travellers“ or“pikeys“ (not polite), as they are called, have a similar culture as the Gypsies have, but are ethnically indistinguishable from the sedentary White Irish or British.
The real Gypsies, however, originated in India.
That’s obvious. They have the skin pigmentation common in India, sort of like Kamala’s. Used to be in the dark ages they were believed from Egypt, which is how they were mis-named as Gypsies.

Were they real Gypsies or actors?
Actors, of course. But it was some proof that Gypsies did have a presence in the US in the 1950s. Probably not in the Screen Actors’ Guild, though.

I just don’t understand this.

Slavery is as old as civilization. It was what you did with prisoners of war and bankrupt individuals. When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, he was well aware that that was incompatible with his continued ownership of slaves. But the institution lasted until 1864, and took an assassination and a civil war to finally abolish. And now it’s back again. Even in England, which fought the hardest to abolish it world wide.
