A former Walmart worker who was part of a theft-busting duo known as “Starsky & Hutch’’ was stabbed by a suspected shoplifter — and says the company betrayed him by firing him afterward.
John Zalesky, 67, of Aurora, Colo., told The Post that he was so good at spotting shifty thieves during his 10-month tenure at a store in nearby Centennial that he and another eagle-eyed cashier nicknamed themselves after the TV crime-fighting duo — and Walmart even hailed him once with an award.
“In 10 months, I stopped well over 100 people,” Zalesky said recently, adding that his work as a front-end associate probably saved the company thousands of dollars in inventory “shrinkage,” a big deal for a relatively small store that he estimated lost $500,000 to theft last year.

A reminder will do little to help.
Walmart’s encouragement of shoplifters shouldn’t go unnoticed.
How utterly stupid!
Actually, it wasn’t the 80s, it was 2004. duh.
When the prevailing attitude of the populace, actively or passively, is toward lawlessness, it’s difficult to do much about it.
If most average to well-off people have their immediate creature comforts and are not themselves threatened, they just don’t care, can’t be bothered.
They expect everything in their life to remain stable. And it will - until the day it doesn’t.
The stores allow the theft. No one is prosecuted.
The thieves tell other thieves and the theft grows exponentially.
The stores raise the prices to offset the theft.
The customers are punished with high prices while the thieves are never held accountable.
The stores close and the thieves move on to other venues.
> Ever since then the policy has been to let them go. <
Some poor slob is standing in a check-out line. He’s paying for an item with his last $20. And watches as a thief pushes a cart full of merchandise right out of the store.
Will this poor slob be a bit more motivated to shoplift the next time he’s in the store? Someone should do a study on that.
What’s the solution? As you noted, it’s often too dangerous for employees to do police work. Perhaps we’ll eventually have to go to a kiosk method. Order at a kiosk. Pay for your order. Then an employee brings your order out.
All this due to decades of insane liberal policies.
And people wonder why everything is so expensive. You are paying for all the stolen goods people.
"Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not cast your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."
Matthew 7:6
That’s correct. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if one of those gang members was behind the stabbing.
Every transient with a stolen shopping cart should be prosecuted. They may not be able to pay a fine but they sure as hell can do community service (picking up trash, removing graffiti, etc.)
Just my opinion.

Excellent truth and right on the money! That is why we are losing this battle. And they have no one to blame but themselves for not being proactive and sacrifice convenience in even the smallest of ways NOW to make stand.
They will selfishly enjoy being fat and having their plate full until the fork fork and plate are taken away.
Walmart just writes off theft from Fed Taxes. Its a win, win situation financially for Wallys and taxpayers lose.......
Makes sense to me... :)
Yep. This creeping allowance of law-breaking is part of the ‘broken windows’ theory of keeping a society stable. Allow broken windows and soon you have much worse to deal with.
Our mistake is thinking this is a stupid move. It’s not stupid at all.
We are being targeted for destruction.
I have seen several shoplifters caught at Walmart. The Walmart people waited till the shoplifters were out of the door an in the parking lot before several, with radios, surrounded the shoplifter and cops called.
I work at a Meijer. They tell employees to watch for shoplifters and when they try they get fired. Companies are more worried about lawsuits from criminals than the welfare of their people.
Keep looking, you will find your balls one day.
