The owner of a luxury $1.8 million Hamptons vacation rental where two Maryland sisters died in a fire sparked by a shoddy electrical job has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.

Peter Miller, 56, admitted to building an illegal outdoor kitchen that overloaded the electricity system of his $ 8,000-per-week pad in Sag Harbor — killing Jillian Wiener, 21, and her 19-year-old sister Lindsay as they vacationed with their terminally ill father in August 2022, Suffolk County prosecutors said Monday.

His wife, Pamela, who managed the popular summer rental, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment.

very sad, but all these similar sorts of stories just keep reminding me, life isn’t meant to be about vacations and wasting money on things that are just momentary pleasures/entertainment, selfish pleasuring, etc.

they could have stayed home and had a great time with dad instead....

the American dream has turned into self destruction for many it seems.

The really big mistake was using electricity for an outdoor kitchen grill when propane or charcoal were safer and taste better. I imagine their illegal there.

I doubt the grill ran on electricity. But, FWIW, some very high-end outdoor kitchens have refrigerators, ice makers, wine coolers, and kegerators and even flat screen TV’s, surround sound systems, lighting and ceiling fans if they are semi-covered.

I’ve never had anything like that, just a simple 4 burner with a side burner propane gas grill on the deck at my old house but I did buy a rotisserie attachment for it.

That ran on electricity, but I used a heavy-duty electrical outdoor rated extension cord to power it, plugged into the professionally installed, outdoor, weatherproof and grounded outlet that I had also plugged to in a string of outdoor lights that I hung on the umbrella of the patio table.

If you wanted a cold one, I either had a cooler with ice on the deck or you had to go through the patio door into the actual kitchen and the fridge.

Until now, I never heard of an outdoor kitchen. I didn't know it was a thing.

Before air conditioning, these were a thing, especially in vacation homes.

“illegal wiring” must mean he used wires that were the wrong gauge (gouge to Kamala) (too small), or used an extension cord, or there was no ground wire. No smoke detectors is also illegal but not everywhere, local laws control that.
