Years ago I read a book by Richard Pipes, Harvard scholar of Russian history who knew Russian fluently.

I recall reading that as they marched the family to the execution chamber several of the guards insisted on molesting or feeling up some of the Romanov women. That they were to be executed then and there was also a surprise to the family, perhaps even in the room itself.
