In an interview this week, Jimmy Kimmel conceded that the end is nigh for late-night talk shows.
“I don’t know if there will be any late-night television shows on network TV in 10 years,” the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host said.
“Maybe there’ll be one but there won’t be a lot of them.”
Jimmy’s right. The culling has already commenced.
After James Corden departed “The Late Late Show” in 2023, CBS didn’t kick off a dramatic “Late Shift”-style talent search of yesteryear — the network brass replaced it with a comedy game show called “After Midnight.”
Nobody shed a single tear.
As much as it pains me to say it, not only is Kimmel’s crystal ball sadly spot-on — but late-night TV should call it quits. None of it is any good anymore.
And that’s not a “back in my day!,” old-man-shakes-fist-at-cloud, “these crazy kids,” criticism, either. Exactly zero young people are watching NBC and CBS at 11:30 p.m.
Late night is now squarely aimed at 50-and-up MSNBC viewers who don’t mind skipping “The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle” and are content with Jimmy Fallon’s struggles to make eye contact. Viewers are probably doing the dishes.
These shows have never in history been such a tedious afterthought.
Going all the way back to when Jack Paar took over “Tonight” from Steve Allen in 1957, hosts have found unique and clever ways to both embrace tradition and boldly forge a new path.
With time, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Craig Ferguson all ably completed that assignment. Obsessed over it even. Their off-beat personalities beamed, and inventive wackiness prevailed.

Late night TV for me is channels that carry....
Blue Bloods...NCIS New Orleans...Law & Order SVU...NCIS...Chicago PD...Chicago Fire....
LFS6B 8-10pm Pluto TV then it’s off to bed for me.
Good post but you forgot rocks stars and bands.
Green Day, Eminem, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Cher, Dixie Chicks, BahBah Streisand and a host of other singing has beens.
You can find Gutfeld’s previous night’s show on You Tube the next morning. And, most channels cut out the commercials.
Carson was middle of the road and kept both sides watching, not like these self righteous preachy aholes you have now.
If they were decent, and not nasty partisan I doctrination shows, they might have survived. I think people would still appreciate comedy, but not at the expense of being lectured and scolded by far left loons all the time
Not “nigh” enough.
Fifty percent of Gutfeld’s jokes are gay jokes or poop jokes and often in combination. I may not have the same politics as Conan, but Conan’s humor never offends me like Gutfeld’s does.

Kimmel is definitely a toady for someone. It was apparent when they did “The Man Show”. Carolla was obviously the top guy from the start. You could tell when the suits shifted everything to Kimmel. I don’t know if Carolla hurt someone’s feelings, or if Kimmel was just more of a suck up, but it was clear when the decision was made. I never could stand that little wiener.

Which makes it more annoying. He made his bones off of doing a show yesterday that he would condemn and turn on the water works about if it was done by someone else today.
Not mentioned is the fact that late night TV is very low IQ, and that their dwindling audiences are just what remains - the dumbest of the dumb. Anyone with any intelligence whatsoever moved on years ago.

I’ve never heard Conan. Actually never heard OF Conan. Last I watched Gutfeld was 2 or 3 years ago. That format doesn’t interest me in the least. It seems all cheesy and cheap.
I remember as a child wanting to grow up so I could stay up and watch the LATE NIGHT MOVIES shown on TV. By the time I was grown up and on my own, talk shows were on all channels. Bummer. I love old movies.
I like old movies also. I download them from a variety of sources. I almost never watch regular MSM TV anymore.
