Secretive peace talks between Ukraine and Russia collapsed before they even started following Kyiv's incursion into the Kursk region last week.
The two countries were set to hold indirect talks in Qatar on a deal to halt strikes on energy and power infrastructure, in a first step towards a partial-ceasefire.
However, Russian officials were said to be furious at Ukraine’s surprise incursion, according to the Washington Post, which revealed the secret Doha talks.
Moscow’s delegation described it as “an escalation" and immediately pulled out of the talks this week. A Qatari diplomat said that Russia “didn’t call off the talks, they said give us time".
Since the proposed talks collapsed, Ukraine's surprise cross-border operation has entered its second week and appears to be strengthening, leading to an unprecedented crisis for Vladimir Putin.
Kyiv has so far seized at least 82 settlements, while more than 120,000 Russian civilians have fled the area.
In a tongue-in-joke jab at the Russian leader, Ukraine has now jokingly declared a 'Kursk People's Republic'.
Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk were photographed planting mock flags declaring the new republic, and joking that they had liberated it from Russia.

You’re a key player in this ridiculous and wasteful “offensive”
Because it was done purely for PR and propaganda purposes
“har har har” and “nyuk nyuk nyuk” is not a strategy.
Here’s the problem...if this supposed conquering is now part of Ukraine...then the two areas in Ukraine belong to Russia. So all Russia has to do is retake area Ukraine claims within Russia proper.
Apparently, the 2000 missing Russian civilians from the Kursk Surround are going to comprise the new “Peoples’ Republic of Kursk”...
“Because it was done purely for PR and propaganda purposes”
How is that?
Ukraine was invaded and their territory was seized.
Why are they not allowed to fight back and do the same to the invader?
Because "consequences".
Of course they should fight back a a military invasion.
I’d expect any country would.
Alexander blows the smoke away:

The majority of residents in the border areas of Kursk region - this is from the Russian Emergencies Ministry - have been temporary resettled and are safe now over the past 24
hours.
More than 720 people have been move to secure areas either independently or in organized convoys and we are then told that the total number of people in temporary shelters - 177
temporary shelters - are already operating in 14 regions.
Nearly 9,500 people - including more than 2,500 children - are staying in them.
And then they say that they have additional shelters for Kursk residents throughout the country and they could put up - house - another 36,000 people, but overall most of the
people have been relocated from the area.
Notice that 9,500.
That gives us an indication of how thinly populated this territory where the Ukrainians now have a presence actually is, and the Russians have previously said that only 2,000
people are unaccounted for.
So who exactly is Zinski going to administer? Who are the people who are going to be administered by the Ukrainian authorities in this area? It’s a fantasy - it is nonsense.
So he’s [zElenskyy] tripling down on an operation which bears all the hallmarks of having failed, and which he is turning from a failure - though it must be said a media success -
he’s busy turning it into an outright debacle, but that’s not surprising - that’s perhaps what you would expect...
Who would have expected that Barf Oblabme would be smarter than you, Fuzz?
"Escalatory dominance"
Please stop posting to me.
Thanks.
But, this is just another example of Ukrainians and you lie, Marcus.
The people of Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk absolutely did not support the illegal coup that occurred in Ukraine 2014 that removed a President the vast majority in those regions voted for. They were under no moral obligation to remain part of Ukrainian nationalist/neo-Nazi government that hated and was persecuting them.
The people of Kursk do not want to join the Ukrainian hellhole. They aren't being liberated.
Fomenting the illegal coup in Ukraine and setting off a civil war is one of the most shameful things this nation has ever been involved with.
As opposed to the “Kursk Peoples Republic”.
You’re trying to reason with unreasonable people. They spend their time insulting anyone who says anything remotely positive about Ukraine.
ZZzzzzz....
