It’s rare for the police and prosecutors to get involved in these predator sting operations.

That’s because our legal system makes it exceedingly difficult to prosecute someone in a “predator” case where there is no actual victim.

Just imagine the narrative of a case like the ones described in this article. The vigilantes set up a sting operation involving a predator who thinks he is carrying on a conversation with a 13 year-old girl. They set up a sting operation, kick the guy’s ass, and the police get involved.

POLICE: “What happened here?”

VIGILANTE: “This deviant predator came here to molest a 13 year-old girl.”

POLICE: “Where is the victim?”

PREDATOR: “Well, there is no 13 year-old girl. It was just me pretending to be one.”

PROSECUTOR: “How the hell am I supposed to prosecute a case where there is no victim, and I would have to prove what the alleged predator did or didn’t know?”
