The cat was roaming free? In front of store? In New York? With all the filth? That’s a strange way to treat something you love.
The cat generally dictates terms. We took in a young male kitten and kept him indoors for "safety" here in urban Phoenix. He got bored and after eating a broken piece of chair leg tip and later a child's Lego wheel and two expensive surgeries later, we let him go outside as he begged to do. Four years later, no more incidents. He loves the freedom the cat flap gives him.

My sister lives in Arizona and is a HUGE animal lover! But yet she has a cat door and hers come and go at will. I can’t tell you how many cats she’s gone through due to coyotes, rattlesnakes etc. Lots of wailing and grief. Go figure.
